Overview

Half-human, half-vampire Dorina Basarab is back--and facing her biggest challenge yet in the next urban fantasy in the New York Times bestselling series.

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir--half-human, half-vampire. As one of the Vampire Senate's newest members, Dory already has a lot on her plate. But then a relative of one of Dory's fey friends goes missing. They fear he's been sold to a slaver who arranges fights--sometimes to the death--between different types of fey.

As Dory investigates, she and her friends learn the slavers are into something much bigger than a fight club. With the Vampire Senate gearing up for war with Faerie, it'll take everything she has to defeat the slavers--and deal with the entirely too attractive master vampire Louis-Cesare....

Shadow's Bane is what so many books attempt and fail to be- Great. It goes beyond edge-of-your-seat action to non-stop, perpetual peril and movement. I don't think Dory sits still for more than 10 minutes the entire book. Seriously. If I had one *possible* quibble with the book, it's that there are no still moments, and that's not really so much a quibble as a plea for a rest. From beginning to end it's action!action!action! How Chance manages to write so vivaciously is beyond me. The woman is a machine!¿Shadow's Bane follows dhampir Dorina "Dory" Basarab, Mircea Basarab's daughter, Dracula's niece, in her quest to find out who the slavers are and what they're doing with all the fae they're kidnapping. The answer is gruesome, truly. There's a parallel story with Dorina as a child helping Mircea with a similar problem, while also revealing some of their early life together.¿Dory's inner evil twin, Dorina, has finally broken loose from her internal prison. But is she really evil? Is she really trying to kill the consul? Is she going to try to take over Dory's body for good, sending Dory into internal exile? Will Dory break up with the luscious Louie-Ceseare? And why would she do that? Is she crazy? Oh wait...yes, yes she is.¿This book is 587 pages long, with NOT A SINGLE ERROR OR TYPO. That's right. Not. A. One. How is this possible? It's called editing people. You should try it. Yes, it's entirely possible to write a book and edit out all the errors/typos/grammatical errors. It really is, and Chance proves it. She leaves nothing to....Chance.¿

Finally, Dory and Dorina are meeting, and it is a a delight to see the understanding that develops after they can be conscious at the same time. This book is full of the finely crafted characters that Karen Chance does so well. Even the minor characters see growth and new options, while the fascinating Mircea and the delicious Louis-Caesare shine throughout the action.

Dorina/Dory Basarab has lived 500+ years fighting her dual nature. Her father, vampire master Mircea, has spent an almost equal amount of time fighting desperately to keep her alive starting when she was a young child. As a dhampir, Dory has ever been an outcast living in the shadows, both feared and reviled by humans, fey, and vampires. Now, Dory has friends and a vampire boyfriend, Louis-Cesare, who loves her despite the issues of having a lethal other half who just might take over permanently consigning Dory to the abyss, trapped in her own personal hell. Someone has kidnapped one of her troll housemate Olga’s nephew. Trolls do not take kindly the use and abuse they have endured for years as low class Dark Fey. Dory also has the challenge of her new Senate position which shows how bad things have gotten in the war between the Fey and Vampires when they let a pariah such as her on the council. With the help of her friends, Dory is trying to track down slavers as well as someone who has powerful magic weapons that will make an advantageous difference in the coming Faerie/Vampire war. This story is told concurrently in distant past from Mircea’s POV in the form of dreams Dory is having about the time period when he was trying to find a way to save her life from that dual nature which seemed to be tearing her apart. Dorina seems to be more active now, but the question remains: is she trying to help or takeover permanently? As Dory finds out more about what Mircea did to save her life, she also learns about her darker twin in surprising ways. As usual in the world and writing of Karen Chance there is much action, adventure, a little romance, and new developments in the storyline sending readers on a wild thrill ride. Epic battles, harrowing escapades, and Dory’s fey princess/dragon roommate, Claire’s, determination to protect her son, plus a house full of more fey, trolls, and vampires keeps the action brisk, entertaining, and spectacular.

Say it ain’t so. She is my ultimate favorite character by Karen Chance. I’m bored by Cassie most times and only read her books to make sure I don’t miss any cross overs concerning Dory. This book was my favorite yet!! Learning oh so much about Dorina AND Mircea?! Exquisite!! I see there is normally a year in between books so here is hoping another comes out THIS year! Amazing writing Mrs. Chance, character building like a BOSS!

Karen Chance is the author to end all authors! This book was non-stop action with humor interspersed throughout. It was worth the wait. I didn't think that a book today could be without errors but it proved me wrong. The world building from the first book on has been flawless. Her characters have been engaging, intricate, and thorough. This series is one that I definitely would by without hesitation.

Swoon. I get the feeling this wraps up Dory!

Firstly: I love Dorina. Mostly for how imperfectly perfect she is and how much fun it is to live in her perspective for the length of a book. Secondly: I love how long these books are, honestly I do, but I feel like there's almost too much detail going on. Again, this isnt even necessarily a bad thing because it really paints a clear picture of the world the author is trying to build. It just slows down the momentum of the book sometimes. Lastly: The action. Is. Amazing. As always :) I love the ridiculously chaotic action scenes of Karen Chance's books and this one delivered just as much as any before it. Only problem is, after I finish reading one of her books, I want another one right away.

I love this series. Constant fighting and such yet not as annoying as her Cassie series. And Louise-Cesare rocks. I just hate waiting years before the next story arrives!

I've waited a long time for the conclusion of this series, and it is everything I hoped for. The humorous parts were unexpected and welcome. I loved the growth of the relationship between Ray and Dora, and the way that Dora learned to accept Dorina as part of herself. Dorina Rocks! Now I'm going back for my second reading.

Just love this story and the way Karen writes! It's so easy to get lost in this world. So good. Definitely one for the must read list.

I love Dorina Basarab I love her story, the grit, the fight, her refusal to be less. Shadows Bane, brings her self out of the darkness of her youth & into her life as she has tried to live it. This story is as wild and chaotic as her existence. Vampires, Light Fey, Dark Fey, their worlds are built through Mircea, the Consul, Caedmon, Claire and Olga. An alliance is sought to avert war, this story weaves together what purpose that could be and because of the people how it cold work. It is thrilling, scary and laugh out loud funny. It is entertaining confusing and apprehensive. It scares you for the survival of characters you root for and culminates in intense satifaction. I always hope there will be more for the joy her tales bring.

I love Dory. I understand this character, as well as empathize with her. I think Ms. Chance has done a brilliant job of both world building and slowly drawing this series closer to the Cassie Palmer series and they have now begun to overlap some in the past few books on the fringes. I can't wait to see what happens next in either series. I was pleasantly surprised by Dorys' actions in regards to LC in this book. Somehow I think this will create more, rather than less drama for everyone surrounding the two of them.

I look forward to the Dorina/Dory novels, fast paced, this latest novel gave us a good look at Dorina, fun characters, all around a great read I stayed up too late reading just one more page?

From book one to now there is never a stagnant character or storyline. Dory is such a badass heroine who continues to fight for her family and friends and for the loyalty, respect, and kinship they have formed. To be able to read the growth of all of these amazing character is such a joy. Not only does Karen keep it light and hilarious but also heartfelt and sometimes heartbreaking-in other words real. There is soul in every word she writes and as a reader you form a true bond with the people she has created. If you love mythology and a truly wonderful adventure that involves an Elizabethan bad boy, a vampire with a fashion sense that makes you smile, and a kick-ass dhampir who likes to play dirty to make sure she sees another day, you need to read this book.

Book Four of the Dory's story does not disappoint. Karen Chance will make you feel every emotion right along with Dory, whether it's joy or sorry or fear or anger. The pacing gets slightly dragged down compared to Fury's Kiss, but that's expected when there's such a lively cast of characters who all get to be important. The worldbuilding that Karen Chance does is amazing. Despite being long and packed with plot, the humor that has long been one of my favorite parts (along with the romance) is in full force. After reading this, I ended up rereading the other books to pick out all the tiny breadcrumbs KC weaves into her narrative, and then reread Shadow's Bane again with a new appreciation.

Awesome as always. Might be time for Cassie and Dory to take the main stage together.
