Anthony Ashley Cooper, the First Earl of Shaftesbury (1621-1683) was a prominent politician during the reign of Charles II. Henry Duff Traill (1842-1900) was a British author and journalist. Inspector of Returns for the Board of Education, he also contributed to many journals and newspapers, including the Daily Telegraph and The Observer. He wrote parody, verse, plays, history, and several biographies, including books on Laurence Sterne and Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin.
