Barry Kingston & the Screaming Souls are essentially a modern-rock bar band, turning out accessible, melodic pop
ock that's about as hooky as Third Eye Blind, but not as heavy, since it feels a little bit like a jam band that doesn't jam. It's straight-ahead stuff, delivered without frills -- the kind of thing that sounds good in a college-town bar. That may seem like a back-handed compliment, but it's not. Even if the band doesn't sound particularly distinctive on its second record, Shakin' from the Trees, they're amiable and modestly charming, like a neighborhood band. They have an everyman feel and that's their biggest attribute.
