From the synopsis, one wouldn’t expect Shawndirea to be an epic fantasy story, but it is. Ben Whytten is an entomologist and one day, instead of capturing a butterfly, he captures a fairy named Shawndirea. And not just any fairy – Shawndirea is destined for the throne of Elvendale. But Ben accidentally ruined the fairy’s wings when catching her. He vows to take her back to her home, a realm named Aetheaon. To get to that realm they must pass through a portal rift in a haunted cavern called Devil’s Den. Once he passes into Aetheaon, Ben comes across a whole set of characters, some good, but most evil, and out to hurt Shawndirea and stop her before reaching her kingdom. Pretty much any fantastical creature passes the line, from wizards to zombies, to immortals looking to gain power. The book is definitely on the darker side of fantasy, and hosts not only an interesting cast of characters but also an engaging plot about a journey slightly reminiscent of the one Frodo makes in Lord of The Rings, and filled with thrilling adventures along the way. With great writing and an amazing amount of creativity, Leonard D. Hilley II makes his characters and plot shine. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

While netting butterflies to add to his vast collection, he mistakenly sweeps what he thinks is the most spectacular butterfly he has ever seen into his net. Upon examining his catch, Ben is horrified to discover he has captured a faery and shredded her delicate wings into useless ribbons. Devastated, Ben vows to take Shawndirea back to her realm, Aetheaon; but he discovers that doing so places their lives into immediate danger. To get to Aetheaon, they must pass through a portal rift deep inside the haunted cavern, Devils Den. Once they cross the rift, Ben enters a world where mysteries, magic, betrayal, and power struggles await. He must adapt quickly or die because Aetheaon is filled with enchanted creatures and numerous races where chaos often dominates order. And since Shawndirea’s destined for the throne of Elvendale, opposing dark forces plot to prevent her from ever reaching her kingdom again. The faery's magic isn't enough to fully protect them, so he must trust other adventurers to aid them during their journey. My Thoughts As someone who enjoys somewhat darker fantasy this appealed to me more after reading the entire book than had first thought when had only a handful of reviews and the book synopsis to go by, as a matter of fact the story sucked me in fairly quickly and my interest never waned once. While it is true that Ben (Roble) and Shawndirea are the two main characters the supporting cast is wide and varied from wizards to elves to dwarves to witches who all add to fleshing out this book, a book that I personally would love to see adapted to the cinema as it would be not only visually appealing but the myriad plots that make up the story would make for some very interesting dialogue as well as action sequences. The arduous journey that Ben undertakes to get Shawndirea home is one that will excite the reader, make them sit on the edge of their seat in apprehension and by the end leave them eagerly looking forward to what comes next ! I totally appreciate the fact that this first book ended it's story arc with no cliff hanger. This was a story reminiscent of the powerful Lord Of The Rings trilogy , the books which for me set the bar for fantasy genre high, but with it's own flair that captivates ones imagination from beginning to end. Part action adventure, part paranormal romance and 100% fantasy Shawndirea was every bit as entertaining as I had hoped it to be! [Digital copy from Author in exchange for honest review]

This book was a blast to read. I adored Shawndirea and Ben's relationship right from the start. She's a feisty little thing, and their romance really brought a smile to my face. The action and writing is fast and easy, making it an enjoyable read for me. The world was also really well done. There were some NASTY baddies in this, but it only makes the story, and stakes, that much more intense. If you like good, unique fantasy stories, pick this gem up!

Shawndirea is a thrilling fantasy adventure. Author Leonard D. Hilley II takes us on a fascinating journey through another world where mythical creatures are plentiful. When Ben catches the faery Shawndirea in his butterfly net he inadvertently damages her wings. Upon discovering this Ben vows to help Shawndirea return to her home, Aetheaon. This may prove more difficult than it sounds. Shawndirea is destined to the throne of Elvendale and so has enemies determined to make sure she doesn’t make it home. In a captivating fantasy Hilley unveils a cast of fully developed, colorful and intriguing characters. His world rises around us with clarity and life as we partake in the journey of Shawndirea and Ben. It is at once a story of love, adventure, strength and hope. I highly recommend it!
