Shelter for Elizabeth by Susan Stoker

Elizabeth Parkins lived through a nightmare come true--getting kidnapped by a serial killer. Seeking a fresh start, she moves to Texas, but escaping her demons proves impossible when she's too terrified to leave her own apartment. A small, accidental fire sparks a coping method she'd never expected, and brings an amazing man to her door.

Firefighter Cade "Sledge" Turner's idyllic life ended the day his sister was kidnapped. Now he knows firsthand that tragedy can befall anyone, at any time. Meeting Elizabeth on the job was a gift. Cade can envision spending his life with this woman. He understands what she's been through, is willing to help her heal...though even Cade is unaware of Beth's new secret obsession.

As Beth takes steps to help herself heal, and Cade attempts to earn her trust and prove his own, they're both about to be tested--in a way that could see everything they've worked for go up in flames.

* Shelter for Elizabeth is the 5th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Too much dialogue, wanted more action. A lot of spelling it out for the reader when illustrating in behavior or setting would have helped the story. I skipped through lengthy dialogue to get to meat of story. Like a lot of Stoker's work, just a few recently have been more dull. Feels like she's trying to do an American Girl character for each issue out there. The pyro flawed chubby hacker, the grumpy blind independent masseuse, the tough but vulnerable seizure whatever. Maybe she will do me, the sleep-deprived short shopaholic nurse who reads too much romance fiction.

I loved this story! The author is able to portray serious and real life problems that people actually have without glossing over them and making them disappear with a fairytale ending. You have Beth, who has Agoraphobia (fear of leaving your home or outside areas) from a traumatic experience she's had, dealing with day to day issues and trying to deal with life. Cade, the firefighter who meets and becomes her boyfriend. The way Beth tries to deal with her problems and live with her choices was heart wrenching at times, but you had to sympathize with her as she tried to take control of her life. I loved how things weren't "magically" wrapped up with rainbows and unicorns. Ms Stoker is known for her Happily Ever Afters after she puts her hero/heroine through the wringer and this was no exception! I can't wait to see what she does in the next book!

This is book 5 in the Badge of Honor Texas Heroes series and it's another great one to add to Susan Stoker's growing list of awesome reads. This book is about Elizabeth Perkins, kidnapping victim in "Protecting Summer" and firefighter, Cade "Sledge" Turner. After being in the same therapy group with Penelope Turner from "Protecting the Future", Beth meets Pen's brother Cade and the story takes off from there. Can Beth allow Cade to strap himself down with a woman who is afraid to leave her own house? This is a great story that deals with Beth's agoraphobic life after the traumatizing kidnapping she endured. Pen and Cade are so great with her. Beth's got A LOT of issues to get through and IF Cade is willing to stand with her, they could have a future together. I had a hard time imagining an agoraphobic and an outdoor lover being together. Read this emotional story of the possibility of meeting the one but holding back because circumstances are way less than ideal. The book seemed to stretch out a little slowly from beginning to mid point but picked up speed toward the end. Received a copy in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed is my own.

Beth is one strong character. She doesn't feel that way though. She doesn't see herself like her friends to a strong, courageous, and brave woman. Luckily for her she has handsome firefighter Cade in her corner to show her. Cade likes to protect and help others. Great hero material. I just loved the way he's there for Beth and the way her treats her. Beth has overcome a lot for what she went through. The courage she shows. Though it's a long road just having the strength she does is amazing. The heat and chemistry between Cade and Beth is HOT! Great story with great characters.

This was an amazing story of finding your way back to yourself. While not as antsy and gut wrenching as most of the books in this series, I am glad that we got Elizabeth's story and that we got to meet Cade. This story tells about a woman who has been through hell and her amazing journey after. I loved Beth and Cade's story so much and would recommend it to anyone.

Loved this book! The author has created another winner. Elizabeth is struggling to recover after being kidnapped and rapped. With her scars and agoraphobia, she feels damaged and less then whole. In Cade's character, the author has created a sensitive man who sees past the damage to see her inner soul....and to describe the scars as "life badges" was just beautiful. Book by book, the author is tearing apart society's biases and allowing the reader to see past handicaps while being completely entertained and reading a first rate romantic suspense novel. This is a must read.

"Shelter for Elizabeth” by Susan Stoker is book number five in the “Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes” series. This is Elizabeth “Beth” Parkins and Cade “Sledge” Turner’s story. Beth survived from being kidnapped and tortured. She decides to move to Texas to get a fresh start and hopefully her fears will go away. Beth’s fears have not gone away. She suffers from Agoraphobia. Sometimes leaving her home or just thinking about leaving her home will set off a severe panic attack. Cade is a firefighter and meets Beth when he is on a call to put out a kitchen fire in her home. There is just something about Beth that gets Cade’s attention. In spite of the excitement the fire caused there were sparks flying between Cade and Beth. Cade wants to get to know Beth and see where the relationship will go. It surprised Beth when Cade showed interest in dating her. Beth is resistant due to suffering from Agoraphobia. Cade is loving, caring, and very understanding of her condition. He convinces Beth to give their relationship a try. After surviving the kidnapping, Beth never dreamed that she would experience love like theirs. But Beth has secrets that she has kept from Cade. Will these secrets destroy their chance at love? Susan Stoker gets the reader’s attention right from the start and keeps it throughout. You get an entertaining story, insight on what people go through that live with Agoraphobia, funny moments, and a hot and steamy romance. I enjoyed Beth and Cade’s story. I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review. FYI, contains mature content.

After being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Elizabeth was kidnapped, raped and tortured by a man who wanted to torture another woman he had been obsessed with. They had both been rescued, but Elizabeth had to work through the agoraphobia that was the result of her ordeal. She couldn't step foot out of her apartment without holding hands with her best friend from group therapy, Penelope...until there was a fire in her apartment. Pen's brother, Cade was one of the firefighters who came to help put out the fire. He was able to calm Beth down and even came back to help her clean up the fire mess the next day. But Beth has a secret. On the outside, it seems she's getting better, but in secret, it's another story. Cade figures out her secret, but will it break them up forever, or will they be able to get over this hurdle? And what happens to Beth when the house gets broken into when she's home alone? Will she be able to save herself until help comes? I love everything Susan Stoker writes. She can do no wrong in my opinion, and this book didn't disappoint. I loved reading about some of the other characters in past books. Bring on September when the next book comes out!

The reader is reintroduced to Elizabeth several years after her kidnapping and discovers how she is coping in her life after moving to Texas. She meets Cade , Sledge to the firefighters, at a fire incident at her home. Both of these characters find the strength to face obstacles and challenges while finding a home in each others hearts. This is a stand alone book however is a part of this author's series. Tears and cheers while reading this book. Looking forward to the next one. Authors copy gifted

Susan Stoker has done it again!!! Shelter for Elizabeth brings us the story of Elizabeth and Cade. We met Elizabeth briefly in Protecting Summer (Seal of Protection series #4) where we witnessed a very traumatic event for Elizabeth. This book is about how she is coping in the aftermath. For a woman dealing with so much fear it is wonderful to see how strong she still is. I fell in love with Cade's ability to look at who Elizabeth is on the inside and not her past trauma. Susan Stoker is a truly talented writer that pulls you in and gets you quickly caught up in the emotions of each character. Each character is different and charismatic but all have an inner strength and determination that is to be envied. I love that Susan brings in characters from other books as each one is memorable and its great to see them in other books as well!! Can't wait for the next book!

5 Stars!!! I was given this book in turn for an honest review Seeking a fresh start after a traumatic ordeal, Elizabeth never expected to fall for Cade, her friend’s brother. Dealing with her agoraphobia was tiring; when a small incident gives her a new release and helps her find a coping mechanism she least expected, things become risky. Can Cade help Elizabeth before things get out of hand? Will this make them or break them? There is always something comforting, exciting and unique about reading a Susan Stoker book. Susan takes a real life situation and brings it to the forefront of our minds; you can feel yourself living that situation and feeling each of the emotions those characters are going through. Her books become more like reality than fiction and she always gives her characters the happy ending they so desperately deserve. A Susan Stoker book without a doubt will always bring you happiness and contentment; always there to give you a pick me up when you need one most. I really liked Elizabeth, she had a wicked sense of humour and she was very intelligent. Her friends and family were everything to her and the last thing she wanted was to be a burden to them. She was tough, strong and an inspiration. To have gone through what she had and still be fighting to live her life as simple as possible and to have found an interest she could do from the safety of her home was outstanding. Cade stole my heart, he was caring, loyal, tough and understanding, nothing discouraged him, and he simply found ways to work round it or to help control it. His friends and family were everything, he would move mountains to help and support them. His honesty was beautiful, he wasn’t afraid to put his heart out there or admit when he was wrong. Elizabeth’s story is inspiring and heart fulling; it shows hope and love can be found in many forms and we should never give up on our dreams or desires. I absolutely loved this story! If you love romance with suspense, happy endings and a little erotica, you will love Sheltering Elizabeth by Susan Stoker. I recommend any of Susan’s books to those who love a good romance with a happy ever after.
