I found this book to be very addictive. I read half of it the first night I purchased it and finished it the second night. Some of the turn of events in this book I never would have suspected. I believe this would make a very entertaining movie and look forward to more from this author.

I was impressed that this book was Mr. Cross' first book. I read reviews from others and was really impressed with this book. It was hard to put down. Characters were believable and real. Just when I thought I had figured it out I would turn the page and it wasn't as it seemed. The book is fast paced, and left me up late reading. Enjoyable. I am amazed a large publisher hasn't picked up this author. This is a well written book I would highly recommend for the beach, a rainy day,or simply your next book. I look forward to the next book produced by this author a true story teller!

The Shepherd did not leave me disturbed, as I have read in some other reviews, although I had been concerned that it would. That said, however, this book will scare you more than once - I promise. Do yourself a favor and don't read too many reviews - though no real spoilers, some reveal enough to alter the ultimate experience with this page-turner! It's a great book that gives you a lot to think about yet has a smooth, seamless storyline. Extremely well done! Don't miss this book! You will be anxiously awaiting the sequel with the rest of us!

HOLY COW!!! Where do I begin? Let me just say that my heart is still pounding after finishing this book a little while ago. I am completely hooked! This is an intense thriller that starts from page 1 and does not let up through the entire book. Cross has created the ultimate bad guy with Ackerman. The male counterpart to Chelsea Cain's Gretchen Lowell. If you enjoy intense thrillers, this is totally one of the best I have EVER read in this genre. The subject matter is a little intense, so I would not recommend this to a young reader; however, I will say that this author does not litter this book with unnecessary vulgar language. With the subject matter, I am not sure why vulgarity would matter, but it does to some people, so I am just letting you know. Cross has written a masterpiece of terror here that will take me a while to recover. This book started out abruptly, but you can remedy that by picking up "The Cage," which is a novella that takes place immediately prior to where this story starts. I liked starting there, because it gave me a little background on the monster known as Ackerman! I see that there are two more stories already written in the series, so I am off to pick up the next now. I think I will take a night off though to catch up on my sleep, because if the next two books are anything like this one, I doubt there will be much sleeping! To Ethan Cross: Thanx sooo much for taking me on this roller coaster of a ride! Cannot wait to see what is in store next for Marcus and Ackerman. -- SPeeD

I live to read and I get really excited when I come across a new author who can capture and hold my attention through the whole book. The Shepherd is a fast-paced book with lots of twists and turns; each time I thought I had figured something out it changed. I also love when an author can tell a very good story and not use profanity (I believe I counted 3 or 4). As I read the story, I found myself pondering about some of the moral delimna's the protaganist faced, I wondered what decisions I might make if placed in the same situations. I highly recommend this book and look foward to reading future stories by Ethan Cross!

This is the first Ethan Cross novel I have read but it won't be the last. I just finished 'The Shepherd' and will be purchasing more of his books. A thrill ride from page one. One of the few books you cannot figure out until the very end... and then Mr. Cross throws you for another curve. Great book!

AMAZING BOOK!!! :P Everyone who has ever had any doubts about the rightness of vigilante justice, NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK!! There is a VAST difference between taking a life because you NEED to, in order to save other lives, and what most people judge vigilante actions as being which is pointless murder. READ this book; I don't think anyone on either end of the spectrum will ever view things the same again. And even other than that element, this is a phenomenal story-line, great action, nonstop suspense, definitely a good and entertaining read.

I really liked this story.. I found that it was a lot like Prison Break season 4 because of the government conspiracy and the twist and turns in the plot but just like I loved that show, I really enjoyed this book. And also like the show I was never expecting the ending, which makes for a great read!

Article first published as Book Review: The Shepherd by Ethan Cross on Blogcritics. Can evil flourish without goodness? Is it possible to be a murderer and yet not be evil? Often what lurks inside the mind makes the difference. In The Shepherd by Ethan Cross, we meet evil head on in his serial killer, Francis Ackerman. Cold and cunning, ruthless and bold, he shows no fear as he stalks his victims. Even the police are not immune to his cunning, when one of their finest is cut down along with his family. To Ackerman it is a game as he twists the tables and reduces his victims to terror, offering them the worst possible avenue in an opportunity to save themselves. It is all a part of his game, a horrible psychological game with unlivable circumstances regardless of how the game plays out.Ackerman is the monster from your nightmares, and possibly worse. Ethan Cross creates such a believable character that you can feel the frost when he is in the room. The hairs rise on your neck and you can feel that faint sense of doom along with the victim. With short work he is able create a feel for the victim themselves, he draws them from parallels of our own life, whether it be our mother or father, our children or sister, it is all personal, and horror provoking.Being a shepherd is tantamount to being a keeper. In days gone by the shepherd watched over the sheep and kept them safe, and nurtured them. With that in mind Cross has created a foil of goodness, to counter act the evil. Marcus Williams is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and drawn into the path of the killer. However, Williams is more than what meets the eye, he has found darkness within himself that he continues to try to purge. Having worked in law enforcement, he is conversant with the ins and outs of procedure, and when he meets the sheriff¿s daughter Maggie, he is smitten. When he discovers a murder close to where he lives, he realizes that the serial killer lurks in the very heart of his home. As Marcus digs deeper into the investigation, he finds that things do not add up. There is more going on with the police and the corruption seems to come from someone high up in the ranks. Can he keep the townspeople safe from a sadistic killer? Who can he turn to for help?In Williams, Ethan Cross has developed a hero full of flaws and with a hint of darkness in his own soul. He has faced evil before and flourished. He is hardheaded, smart, quick on his feet, and seems to be able to think his way out of the worst situations. He maintains his calm in the toughest environment and has the ability to calm the reader as well as the victim. He is charismatic and people are drawn to him. However, he is not sure whom he can trust. This powerful thriller keeps the pace at a rapid fire. Once I started reading, it was difficult to put the book down. Right when you think you have an understanding of the situation it takes a difficult turn, throwing you off stride. It is must have for the action and thriller fan, and a great addition to any library. The Shepherd is full of surprises to the very end, you won¿t be disappointed and you won¿t see it coming.

The blurb on the cover of `The Shepherd¿ by Ethan Cross states that this book is the ¿Silence of the Lambs meets the Bourne Identity¿. I totally agree with that description. The villain Francis Ackerman, Jr. is truly frightening. His father trained him to be that way from the beginning of his childhood. Why did his father want to create such a monster? This book flowed very quickly but the descriptions of the violence against the victims chilled me so much that I had to take breaks from reading it. I would have like the book better if there were breaks but I did read this book as a sort of test to myself to see what I could stand fright wise. Both the villain and Marcus Williams caught up in a conspiracy that reached to the top of the nation. This conspiracy makes you consider what is right and wrong. The end justifies the means is an old argument that fuels the conspiracy. I recommend this book for everyone who likes a scary thriller.I received this book as a win in a GoodReads contest but my review was in no way influenced by that. My thoughts are my own.
