The Sheriff by Nan Ryan

There are no laws when it comes to love.

Kate Quinn arrives in Fortune, California, with little but a deed to a run-down Victorian mansion and a claim to an abandoned gold mine. But a beautiful woman on her own in a town of lonely, lusty miners also brings trouble.

Sheriff Travis McLoud has enough to handle in Fortune, where fast fists and faster guns keep the peace, without the stubbornly independent Miss Kate to look after. But when a dapper, sweet-talking stranger shows a suspicious interest in Kate, Travis feels it's his duty to protect her.

With her days spent searching for the glimmer of gold, Kate has no interest in the sheriff and his unnecessary warnings. But she can't prevent him from invading her dreams and showing her that a rough-around-the-edges lawman just might have more to offer than a well-heeled gentleman -- including a heart of gold.

Once again Nan Ryan captures your imagination with 'The Sheriff'. Kate Quinn is every girls fantacy for adventure and Sheriff Travis McLoud the man you dream of meeting up with. The California Agent, Harry Conlin, is an interesting character thrown into the mix. Marsha Matlock Russell - Clovis, NM

I'll start this out by being honest. I haven't actually finished the book. It was sooo boring that I set it down 3/4 of the way through. There is no suspense at all. I know it's a romance not a mystery. But come on make us work a little to figure things out. I did like the herione she is spunky.

In 1855, impoverished twenty two year old Kate VanNam leaves Boston to start over in Fortune, California where she has inherited a mansion and a gold mine from her Great-Aunt Arielle VanNam Colfax. When her Uncle Nelson, who raised her and her brother dies, she decides to find her fortune out west. However, when she arrives on the West Coast she finds her situation not golden as the house is so dilapidated it may be dangerous and there is no gold left in her mine ergo no fortune. --- Sheriff Travis McLoud does not hide his fear that the beautiful easterner means problems keeping her safe from the horde of miners wanting her. Also arriving in town is Winn Delaney, who decides the Bostonian is the perfect complement to him as the only true gentleman in Fortune. However, Travis soon finds he wants to step to the head of the line courting the kissable Kate even as that makes the owner of the Golden Nugget Valentina Knight jealous while someone wants the ¿worthless¿ gold mine at any cost to others especially the well being o f the transplanted Bostonian. --- This is an amusing western romance starring two amiable protagonists. Travis has a strong foreboding that the arrival of Kate is trouble for him, but initially he thinks as a law enforcement official, but soon revises his estimation to that of his heart in jeopardy. The zany story line makes for a fun mid nineteenth century tale. Nan Ryan always writes an exciting and delightful romance novel. --- Harriet Klausner
