I really enjoyed book 1 and couldn't wait to dive into book 2 because this focuses on Laelynn and Dustan (whom was my favourite characters in the last book) Once again Desiree Williams has captured my heart with her characters. Laelynn is such a sweetheart and a genuine person. Her love and niceness shine through in everything she does. I loved seeing her find herself with her new gifts and allowing herself to love. Dustan is once again Dustan, though he is more subdued at the start. Laelynn is his heartsong and along with that comes new gifts! Dustan is a changed man, literally!! I love his new gifts and how he struggled with what he becomes. So often people just take things like that and accept it without question, where as if it happened to me I know I'd question why and I'm glad Dustan was like that! The romance is once again so sweet. I have to say though, that I'm glad both of them had reservations and it wasn't a case of insta love. Because they are so far away at the start they struggle with their feelings and it takes awhile for them to embrace what they have. There is more action in this book than in book 1, which I again loved!! Some heartbreaking things happen but the way the gang deals with it was inspiring. We still don't see much of the Varkadons head honcho but you get the feeling through out the book that there is an epic battle coming! The girls are getting stronger as are their heartsongs and I can't wait to see the worlds class! Anyway, Shifter's Heart was an amazing second book. Right from the start you will be captivated by the characters and the world that the author has created. The plot flows seamlessly and you will fly through the pages. I loved this one and am eagerly awaiting book 3 to see what happens.
“Shifter's Heart” was just as epic as book one! However I have to admit that the beginning made me doubt. It was unexpected to say the least, but once my fears calmed down, it was simply awesome! I loved Dustan and Laelynn in book one, “Heart Song,” and so I was super glad to read their story! I felt there's was more intriguing then Alanna's and Jerric’s. Despite that I didn’t think it was quite as sweet as their romance, Dustan and Laelynn had a lot more humor in their conversations. There also were more fun surprises and definitely a lot more twists that had me on the edge of my seat! The message in "Shifter's Heart" was really powerful. Laelynn really struggles with fear in part of the novel, but she doesn't let it consume her hope in her Maker. My favorite line by her is when she is speaking to a little girl and says: "We may feel broken, but where there is life there is hope. And we can choose to either live in fear of what tomorrow holds, or we can embrace its possibilities. Never should we hide in our fear, but chase the hope that tomorrow brings." To say that spoke volumes to me is an understatement. It really made me think about how I let fears dictate my life rather then live in the hope Jesus Christ gave me. The one thing that got me with this novel was that ending! I don’t even know what to do with it because I’m in such a state of shock! It was absolutely shocking to say the least and need book three right now to see what happens! So like with “Heart Song” I once again ask: do I recommend this novel? And once again I give a hearty YES! There is more beautiful romance, witty humor, great fantasy aspects, and plain awesome everything. Another 5 stars in the Heart Song trilogy! *(I did receive this novel for review from the author, but went ahead and bought it because the series is so good. All thoughts expressed are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.)*
I had extremely high expectations for Shifter's Heart after reading Heart Song last year, and it feels so good to say that Shifter's Heart exceeded those expectations! I loved every minute I spent continuing the story of Alanna, Jerric, Laelynn, and Dustan! The setting was, once again, richly and vibrantly imaginable. The description making it like a brilliantly filmed movie in my head, but better because I was able to see into the characters minds and feel their emotions! Speaking of the characters... I was overjoyed to spend more time with Alanna and Jerric and see more of Laelynn and Dustan! It was like seeing old friends that I hadn't seen in over a year! I really enjoyed the entertaining interactions between these two couples - trust me, there were some laugh out loud moments! The multiple perspectives were done perfectly, flowing seamlessly from character to character. The four main characters were also very relatable. Even though they are extremely gifted, they have to work hard and still have doubts. Their strength, caring natures, and leadership were inspiring and shown on every page. I loved watching their inner growth and making intriguing discoveries along with them! Which brings me to the brilliant plot! I loved the gifts that they have and how they use them, and figuring things out right along with them. There were so many discoveries, but I'm not telling you about any of them! There was plenty of action mixed in with lots of amazingly witty banter, dialogue, and swoonworthy romance! I mean, Jerric and Dustan? Trust me - those are two male character full of swoonworthiness (and in one book - talk about a two for one)! The relationships are built on pure, true love and I really enjoyed the whole aspect of being each other's heart song - awww! I hope I find mine someday! I loved how they talked through their problems and were there to support each other, they were truly each others best friend (but more). I think we should see more of that in YA instead all of the unnecessary drama, insta love, and love triangles that seem to dominate YA. This book is full of fantastic themes that are written into the actions and words of the characters. Love, joy, strength, hope, and peace among the most prominent! There were multiple occasions when I felt compelled to highlight sections or sentences to read again (I've been doing that more often lately, just so you know). Did I have any problems with this book? Well, there is a major cliff hanger, but it's okay because I have hope! But I really hope the third book comes out soon - I mean it should be illegal to have to wait an extreme amount of time before reading the next book! I can't even begin to tell you how utterly captivating this series is! It's so fantastic you just need to read it for yourself! Oh, and make sure you read book one Heart Song first, because it's also amazing and that way you can get the fully fantastical effect! Can not wait for Heart of the Guardian to come out! I revieved a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. This in no way affected my review, all thoughts and opinions are solely my own.
