Overview

Shimmer: Songs of Night by Raven Howell, Carina Povarchik

For a child, the time between sundown and sunup can be an enchanting world of mystery and fun, a time when fairies dance, night creatures creak and hum, and stars reign over all. What are a child’s thoughts when he or she hears the evening’s first cricket, has a sleepover with friends, or looks up at the stars and wonders, “What’s up there?”

Born, raised and currently living in Argentina, Carina usually signs her works as Catru. Carina's parent's house was full of tools and handcrafted products made by them. That's where she got her love for creating.
Carina always did lots of things and tried all kinds of techniques. When 5 years old, she made paintings with ink using her own style and sold them on the street. Carina first graduated from a short computer program and then went on to graduate with a Bachelors in Educational Technologies. She subsequently taught computer programming at the college level, for many years. In 2007, she received, as a birthday surprise gift, a drawing tablet. And there, it all began.

I love this poetry book! The elements of the earth and the seasons make delightful appearances, weaving in and out through the pages. Raven Howell's poetry is enchanting, and accessible to the youngest readers. Older readers be be captivated by the concepts of cosmic places, fairy rings, and when the Sandman leaves the sea. Joyful poems and vibrant artwork make a perfect union. Crina Povarchik's artwork nearly dances off the pages! Really colorful and fun. Children will love this! I purchased this book in hardcover and I'm so glad I did. It's an evergreen book, to be revisited for many years to come! I truly recommend this book for all ages!

Reviewed by Bruce Arrington for Readers' Favorite Shimmer, Songs of Night written by Raven Howell and illustrated by Carina Povarchik is a masterful selection of poems and illustrations that dive into the imaginary world of children. The ordinary questions, reasonings, or fears a child might have are brought up in full, lively illustrations and carefully worded poems. I have to say that rarely have I ever read a book like this. It is a wonder. Let me say it again: a wonder. And it’s as if the poems and the illustrations are so intertwined that they have to be together. You cannot separate them, and if you did, you might feel like something was missing. The vast imagination of the poems coupled with the colorful child-appealing, detailed drawings take you into another world—the world of a child. It’s the sort of book that allows adults to step back and revisit the imaginations of their childhood, if for only a few moments. To temporarily step back in time to when they were young. With so many negative things in the world today, it is refreshing to dive into a book such as this. The messages are so positive that they ask to be read over and over again. And each poem, reflecting on a different topic, can stand alone as wonderful discussions between parents and children. The author, Raven Howell, is an award winner, and it’s obvious to see why from reading this book. I highly recommend Shimmer, Songs of Night for children of all ages, and for everyone who is young at heart.
