This is a hard story to read. But then, when did Ms. Lindun ever cut any corners or gloss over the harshest of realities that touch the lives every day people, every day? The ravages of drug addiction, the bitter truth that people will sometimes choose to believe what they want to believe, and the heartbreaking reality that sometimes faith, hope, and love are not always the answers to overcoming abuse. Laramie Porter finds this out first hand, and her brother is the cause. How can she fix what he’s done? How can she escape his wrath for even trying? Derrick Garrison, unsuspecting cowboy, is faced suddenly with a reality he can’t, and for a time, won’t believe. But he, too, must eventually accept the unbelievable, and together, Laramie and Derrick will fight against all odds to set their world right. This story had me tensed up most of the way, tearing up from time to time, and believing all of the way. Well done. I purchased this book online and have given this review freely and without compensation of any kind.
Warning...D'Ann Lindun's "Shot Through the Heart" will keep you up reading late into the night. With very believable characters and plot line, it is filled with edge of the seat suspense from page one. Laramie is thrown into a life threatening adventure when she tries to help her sister-in-law to safety after being beaten so bad that she lost her unborn child. To make things worse, it was Laramie's brother Lawrence that she needed protected from. An enraged Lawrence who happens to be the local sheriff, will do anything to keep his drug addiction a secret, including murdering his wife and try to silence his sister. Derrick is the perfect cowboy hero, determined to protect Laramie and discover her secrets. So how do you get people to believe you when the bad guy is a well liked, upstanding sheriff? A great read. Can't wait for D'Ann's next book.
From the minute I saw the cover of this book I knew I had to read it - love a cowboy in chaps! Plus, the title had me singing Bon Jovi, and that is never a bad thing! But back to the book: Shot Through the Heart is a suspenseful read packed with twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I loved Derrick's rescue of Laramie in the opening chapters, and the heat between them continued to build - just like the forest fire they're escaping. D'Ann Lindun draws the Western landscape so clearly I could see the mountains, trees, streams and ponds. This book put me in mind of a more modern Louis L'Amour novel - and I loved Louis as a kid! If you're looking for a fun, Western read chock-full of cowboys, murder and a happily ever after, give this book a try.
