It took seven months, but the Union Army ultimately did the Confederacy in at Vicksburg. After repeated assaults, Grant finally found an opening virtually behind Confederacy lines.
Vicksburg's surrender brought with it control of the Mississippi, and with control of the river, the Union had but to close its fist.
