Sierra Bride by Jenna Kernan

Powerful Sam Pickett is used to getting his way. So he is baffled when Kate Wells, a feisty little hellion who steps between him and a bullet in the back, isn't remotely interested in becoming his latest plaything—despite the fact she's poor, with an aunt and blind sister to support!

Sam's life is transformed by this compassionate, hardworking woman—who is strangely cynical for one so young. He fully intends to make Kate his bride, but that could prove to be the greatest challenge of his life!

Unlikable Characters---Unlikable Story First Kate saves his life. Sam thanks her by offering her a shot at being his mistress. Our poor but proud heroine says absolutely not! Her blind sister suggests perhaps a monetary reward would be nice. Our proud heroine again says absolutely not. The next day her aunt tells her the boarding house they own is being foreclosed. She goes immediately to Sam the slime and tells him she'll take the mistress deal. She never once considers telling him that she might like the reward money. But it works out ok because even though her sexual experience with her husband was horrible within 15 minutes of being with Sam she is hot to trot so to speak.. Needless to say by the end of 2 days they're hopelessly in love. Don't waste your time with this one.

This seemed like an interesting story at first, playful and romantic between the 2 characters, until I got to know Sam better. He was pretty conceited, a trait I loathe in a hero. He just couldn't understand why this pretty but poor girl, Kate, didn't fall at his feet, when other women would give anything to be with him. And when Kate introduced him to Phoebe, her younger, blind sister, Sam shook her hand but didn't speak to her - in fact, he didn't speak one word to the girl the entire time he was in the parlor with her. Not one. This really bothered me.
