Sierra Jensen Collection, Volume 1 by Robin Jones Gunn

Happenstance…or God’s Great Plan?

She’s the bold, free-spirited type. She’s cute, she’s fun, and she’s following God. She’s Sierra Jensen, Christy Miller’s good friend, ready for her junior year of high school! All twelve books in the popular Sierra Jensen series come together in four volumes to reveal the ups and downs of Sierra’s incredible God-led journey!

Volume One: In Only You, Sierra, she’s nervous to be the “new girl” after her family moves to Portland and wonders if meeting Paul in London was only by chance. Just when everything important seems to elude her, all it takes is one weekend In Your Dreams to prove otherwise. But even a vacation doesn’t keep her troubles away in Don’t You Wish.

Christy Miller knows a good friend when she meets her,

and so will you—

Get ready for Sierra Jensen!

Only You, Sierra

The Europe mission trip brought Sierra Jensen the best gift possible: two new friends, Katie and Christy. But now Sierra is headed home, and she can’t help but wonder will her friendships last? And what about her new home? Her family moved while she was gone, and that means facing a new high school. And the biggest question of all: Will she ever find love? Then a chance meeting in a London airport answers that question. Paul makes her heart leap. But she’ll never see him again! Or will she?

In Your Dreams

Sierra has had it! She’s done everything she can to find the right job, good friends, and most important, true love. But nothing is working out. Now she has to stay home to care for her grandmother. By herself. For the whole weekend! It will be terrible. But a series of startling surprises shows Sierra just how wrong she is—and before she knows it, she’s on her way to the perfect job, her first real date, and an encounter with a mysterious stranger.

Don’t You Wish

Sierra has three wishes: visit her California friends; have her older sister, Tawni, disappear; and learn more about the mysterious stranger. When Easter break arrives, Sierra’s first wish comes true! She’s headed to Newport Beach for fun, sun, and surf. Unfortunately, not only does Tawni not disappear, she accompanies Sierra on her escape. What’s worse, everyone has a boyfriend except Sierra. But will her wishes begin to change as she realizes God wants to mold her according to His wishes?

Story Behind the Book

“After writing the twelve-book Christy Miller series for teens, a new character showed up on the pages of the final novel. Her name was Sierra Jensen, and she was so compelling as a teenage character that readers began asking for a series about Sierra in order to hear more about her life choices. Our family had just moved to Portland at the time, and I found it easy to picture a sixteen-year-old like Sierra shopping at the local vintage clothing stores, hanging out with friends at a garage band concert, and serving at the homeless shelter on weekends.”

In our world today it is hard to find a Christian book, especially one as good as this! Unlike some books, the Sierra Jensen Collection is realistic and includes verses and lessons from the Bible. After reading this I felt like my walk with God had grown stronger!

My daughter is 9 and has read all of the Sierra Jensen books. She loved them so much she wanted her own set. Since getting her own, she has reread them several times and continues to enjoy them and loans them out to her friends. They are good quality in the hard cover and a series that helped to change her view of reading as enjoyable and not just because she has to read something!

The Sierra Jensen Collection, Volume 1 represents 3 books in the 12 books series. These 3 books follow Sierra's story as she grows through some of what the author portrays as the growing pains of a Christian based teenage girl. Sierra is introduced to us as a mission traveler, adventurous, even returning from a trip abroad to a new adventure - her family has moved in with her aging grandmother who is facing a life change of her own: the onset of dementia or early Alzheimer (not clear on which). Sierra's friends seem to be doing what teenager's should on cue, and it bothers her that she is not. She wants to have a boyfriend, the intimacy of a personal relationship, and to make friends at her new school as easily as the one's she has left behind. We are with her as she faces new challenges, like being alone with her grandmother when she gets a call that she needs surgery while Sierra's parent's are away; and realizing the truth of her friends' personal relationships. I was worried about taking on this reading, and it did take me a while to sort it all out. I like the concept of following Sierra through so much growth, but worried about her focus on having a boyfriend so much. I also wondered why her friends and her were not focused on anything together that was more interactive and time consuming. Overall, the concepts of teenage angst, problem solving and Sierra's maturity over time are definitely present. I wouldn't mind my teenage daughter reading the series, but I am not sure if it will be one of her favorites. I am going to encourage her to read the previous series, first. This was very cutesy, calm reading.

Robin Jones Gunn is one of the greatest Christian authors I have ever read. Her books aren't fantasy, they're a version of reality and this is shown though her characters, Christ Miller, and her good friends Sierra Jensen and Katie. Gunn has written a seperate series for each of these fine young women, but the one I'm wrting about today is Sierra. Christy Miller knows a good friend when she meets her, and so will you— Get ready for Sierra Jensen! Only You, Sierra The Europe mission trip brought Sierra Jensen the best gift possible: two new friends, Katie and Christy. In Your Dreams Sierra has had it! Don’t You Wish Sierra has three wishes: visit her California friends; have her older sister, Tawni, disappear; and learn more about the mysterious stranger. We first meet Sierra in the last 'Christy' book, but you really can't get to know her until you read this, based on her very short appearence. Only You, Sierra; In Your Dreams; and Don't you Wish give us a close look at the life of this wonderful young Christian. There's not as much of the original God Lovers in Sierra's books as I would like, but that's just my opinion. The balence Gunn created between the new charaters and old is very good. While Sierra is like Christy in some ways, they are as different as night and day. While Sierra became a Christian at a very young age, Christy wasn't saved until her teens. Sierra's free-spirited and isn't ashamed of saying what she thinks while Christy is more reserved and quiet. Sierra Jensen, Volume I follows the story of a young woman as she deals with real-life problems and situations. Between work, school, friends, family, and a grandmother who hardly even knows who she is Sierra stays strong and faces it all with a courage that is truely admirable. Read as she encounters them head on with an atttude and flair that could only be Sierra. Travel with her on her journey to be closer to God, and closer to her family and friends.

I have been a fan of Robin Jones Gunn ever since reading the first book in the Christy Miller series. I think I've read about 99.7648% of all the books she's written. :) I remember falling in love with the Christy Miller series and the other books that followed included those in the Sierra Jensen series. I can remember reading the books as fast as I could and then begging my parents to take me to the store to buy the next one. When I look around the young adult section of a bookstore, I can't believe what is put out there for our kids. It makes me really glad that Robin and Waterbrook Multnomah have decided to keep these books in print. They tell a great story and are filled with God's truths, not those that the world would like to fill our kids minds with. Robin is a wonderful story teller and I look forward to sharing these books with my own daughter someday. . Disclaimer: A complimentary copy of this book was provided for this review. Sierra Jensen Collection, Volume 1 by Robin Jones Gunn The first book in this collection, Only You, Sierra starts out with her returning from a ministry trip. She meets a boy, Paul at the airport & feels an instant connection with him even though he is three years older than her. She is also dealing with her family's move to Portland & starting a new school. She is in such a hurry to grow up and be in college that she is not even trying to make friends. If she can just get through this next year and a half unnoticed..... The second book, In Your Dreams starts out with Sierra caring for her aging grandmother while her family is out of town. Her grandmother needs surgery and Sierra steps up and shows how mature she is in handling the situation. Her friends from the ministry trip she took want her to come visit over spring break, so she is job hunting to pay for the plane tickets. Her first interview does not pan out, they want her to work on Sundays & she needs to have the day free for church. By chance she goes to a bakery and ends up landing a job there. She is also slowly making friends and has her first date. The third book, Don't You Wish Sierra is looking forward to her trip to California to visit her friends. Until her sister tells her she is going along with her. They have a complicated relationship with a lot of jealousy on both sides. Her sister meets a boy on the first day in California and all Sierra's friends are part of a couple. She feels like an outsider, a baby and wishes she were grown up and in college like them. As the week goes on she begins to grow and realize that she should live with godly contentment and pay attention to her side of the fence. She also prays about her relationship with her sister and realizes she doesn't really know her at all. These were very cute books, but I didn't feel like they were very realistic in the way the kids talked and interacted with one another. Hopefully the rest of the series deals with more issues that kids face these days. I feel this volume would be appropiate for Jr High & High School aged girls. I received this book free from the publisher (WaterBrook Multnomah) through the Blogging for Books book review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
