The death of Nyla's husband comes as a shock to everyone except Nyla. What's shocking to Nyla is her inability to grieve his death like a typical loving wife should grieve. But Nyla isn't a typical loving wife. She's a woman in desperate need to breathe. The oxygen in her life has long gone, and the astonishing thing she feels from her husband's death is relief, not grief.

Even more astonishing is the rare and unexpected friendship which develops between Nyla and her dead husband's mistress. However, Nyla isn't aware her new best friend is a former mistress. And as their friendship deepens into an unshakable bond, Nyla is forced to face secrets her husband took with him to his grave. This means she has to sift through mud to unravel the truth. A truth that's better off dead. Yet through it all, the one thing which makes Nyla violently breathless, is the exact same thing that causes her to finally breathe.

Sifting Through the Mud is a poignant tale of forgiveness, betrayal, and starting life again. The author of this book successfully brings the reader’s attention to the different sides of grieving- not all of us grieve the same way. She also incorporates ugly secrets, a cool sense of heartbreak and learning to breathe again, and unconventional friendships. This is a unique tale that will leave readers craving more from the author. I loved every minute of this novel and strongly suggest readers trying this one out. When Nyla’s husband dies she feels a strange sense of relief. While this seems to be an unacceptable means to grieving, she can’t help her feelings because she had a very troubled marriage. While deep down we all know she should feel deeply saddened by her loss, the continuation of the book allows us to sympathize with her feelings and her grieving process. When Nyla befriends a women named Vivian, it seems that two unlikely souls were able to find solace for one another. But, in the midst of this budding friendship lies secrets and lies. You see, Vivian is her late husband’s mistress. This causes emotional turmoil to both as they try to sift through their feelings and heartbreak. Can these two women grow from their bond? You will have to read and find out. This is a wonderfully written and unique tale that I fell in love with instantly. The way the story is told allows readers to feel a deep connection with both characters and we are able to sympathize with both of their situations. If you are a fan of women’s fiction, specifically the inspirational kind than I strongly suggest checking this book out. It’s a good one!

I loved reading SIFTING THROUGH MUD because the story is far different from anything I've read previously. It tells the complicated story of a friendship that develops between Nyla, who's estranged husband, Nathan, recently died, and Vivian--his mistress. Both Nyla and Vivian are complex, well-developed characters. While Nyla has no clue who Vivian really is, or about the growing secret that she's keeping, Vivian knows exactly who Nyla is. As the bond between Nyla and Vivian deepens, Vivian's betrayal looms larger. Yet, despite this, and Vivian's other major faults, I couldn't help but to feel empathy toward her character. This is due to Gray's layered development of Vivian's character, which shines throughout this book. Gray also did a splendid job in developing three-dimensional secondary characters that sparkled and enhanced the story. I look forward to reading whatever Gray writes next. I'd even be happy to revisit the lives of Nyla and Vivian.

Demetria Foster Gray delivers a heart-stopping, emotional  punch with her debut novel, Sifting Through Mud. The boundaries of friendship are reinvented in this sexy, thought provoking tale of two women on a tightly woven journey of self discovery. The story is rich with characters you'll laugh with, and cry with, and pull for in the end.

Shifting Through Mud is the story of an unlikely friendship between widow and mistress. Nyla, the widow, is unaware that her new friend, Vivian, had been carrying on an affair with her now deceased husband—and is pregnant with his baby! As the two women meet, become friends, and eventually nurture a bond of sisterhood, the reader turns each page with the realization that the train wreck is coming: sooner or later, Nyla is going to find out the truth. And what will become of their friendship then? You have to read this wonderful story to find out. The author does a great job of making us sympathetic to all the characters—even the mistress! I enjoyed this book from page one and look forward to future novels from Demetria Foster Gray. Well done!

A Great Debut Novel! Rating:  4 1/2 stars I received this book for review from Pump Up Your Book and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. This book is written from the first person point of view – that would be our two main characters Nyla Kane and Vivian Phillips. Nyla Kane is a woman who’s not happy with her life right now.  Vivian Phillips is also a woman who’s not happy right now.  Their lives collide and it’s an interesting beginning.  These are two women who don’t realize how much they have in common when they first meet. Our author has Nyla seeing a professional and the way that the scenes are written, either the author has personal experience as a reference or she has done a lot of observing and research to get the scene so it appears accurate.  The scenes will have you feeling as if you’re eavesdropping on those visits.   The author has included a scene-stealer and her name is Miss Parks.  I couldn’t help it but she had me laughing.  She’s the next-door neighbor who thinks she knows everyone’s business.  This book shows how a friendship grows from nothing and not all are forged from childhood.  But there’s jealousy that can also rear its ugly head.  This is a book that you can let life interfere – which is ok since that’s what this book is about. It has a lot of things in it that make it a great book club read – it has plenty of things to discuss.  If you’re not sure whether to get an e-copy or paperback, I vote for the paperback.  It’s a book that you could take a lot of places where you don’t have to worry about needing a place to plug in.  For me the saddest two words I had to read was “The End”.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching this friendship blossom and I’m sure you will feel the same.

Sifting Through Mud is a wonderful story that is told in the alternating first person perspectives of Nyla and Vivian. The author easily draws the reader into Nyla and Vivian's story, you can't help but feel compassion for these women, and the unexpected situation that brought them together through Nathan's deception. As their story unfolds, they weather a storm of trials and tribulations as they work through the betrayal, anger, and grief that is brought upon them from Nathan's death, which ultimately turns into an unlikely bond of friendship that grows out of forgiveness and redemption.
