Overview

Northern California’s elite Police K9 Units arrive at an abandoned warehouse after a high-speed chase and apprehend two killers after they have fled a grisly murder scene. This barely scratches the surface of a bloody trail from a prolific serial killer that leads to unlocking the insidious secrets of one family’s history, while tearing a police department apart.

Jack Davis, a top K9 cop with an unprecedented integrity, finds himself falling for a beautiful murder suspect and struggling with departmental codes. He and his loyal four-legged partner, Keno, are thrown into the clutches of lies and deception.

Megan O’Connell, a website designer recluse that suffers from agoraphobia and can’t leave the safety of her home, finds herself the prime suspect in her sister’s murder.

Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has a secret. Someone else must die to keep the truth buried forever. Silent Partner is a suspense ride along that will keep you guessing until the bitter end.

First Line: The rain stopped abruptly on the thirty-sixth consecutive day of torrential downpours.A prolific serial killer is leaving a bloody trail that will unlock one family's secrets while it tears a police department apart. Jack Davis, a K9 cop, finds himself falling in love with a suspect. Megan O'Connell, an agoraphobic, is the prime suspect in her sister's murder. Psychopath Darrell Brooks is on a mission to drive Megan insane. Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has a secret. If the truth is going to remain buried, someone is going to have to die.Silent Partner is a fast-paced roller coaster ride with a surprising climax. I really enjoyed reading about crime fighting from the point of view of the police K9 units. It's something that I hope Chase continues in future books.Chase also shows a talent for characterization. The bad guy, Darrell Brooks, aroused so much disgust in me that I wanted Keno and all his other four-legged buddies on the force to tackle him and chew on him for a long time. Even one of the victims who lasts for only a page or two is drawn with poignancy: "She eyed the stash. Her friend Tiffany was going to be so jealous. Maybe this guy was going to be her Richard Gere from Pretty Woman, she thought hopefully to herself."As much as I enjoyed the characters and the story, I feel that the book needed more proof-reading and more editing. It's a rare book these days that isn't published with at least one glitch, but Silent Partner had more than its fair share. The tendency towards sentence fragments repeatedly threw me out of the story and interrupted the pace of the narrative. Like this one: " Darrell emerged from the other end of the alley kicking an empty whiskey bottle as he rounded the corner. Feeling better, relaxed, and wanted to get back to the anonymity of his car."Or this example: " Detective Preston sat annoyed at her desk, cluttered with a mountain of paperwork. Eyes sunken, weary from the lack of sleep. Stuck with endless paperwork, glued to her desk without a break in seven hours."I like the occasional sentence fragment; I use them myself. However, too many can break the flow of reading-- almost like a case of the hiccups.Regardless of whether these things bother you, too, as a reader, Silent Partner is a fast, action-packed read with a K9 cop, Jack Davis, and his four-legged partner, Keno, at the heart of an engaging story. I will be keeping an eye on author Jennifer Chase.

If you like crime and the different faces of a killer you will enjoy Jennifer Chase's Silent Partner. This is one book that portrays four different killers and the life of Police Officer Jack Davis and his canine companion, Keno. One never knows what life will bring to them, but for a few people life is most unkind. Jack sees how his friends, Teresa and her younger sister Maggie, are taken from their home after their father finally manages to kill his wife in front of them. A long time abusive relationship had been going on and the young girls' lives are changed forever by his last act. The two girls are raised by their grandparent who later also dies in a horrible incident. Jack grows up to become a police officer. After a few years on the force, he becomes a K9 officer and is assigned a companion dog, Keno. This book has great stories of the police dogs and their human companions. It is an awesome tribute to K9 units anywhere in the world. The crimes in this book are realistic and well handled by the author. The suspense is great; you won't discover the truth until the last few pages of the book. In fact after you think the story is complete there is the last final twist to it. Good job. I recommend this book for adults.

Jennifer Chase has rightfully earned a strong fan base following the release of her first two novels. I have been fortunate enough to review both of these books upon their publication, so it was with great anticipation that I waited to find a copy of her newest release in my hands. And, I was not surprised to find that Chase had produced yet another thrilling page-turner. Silent Partner is a novel that will chill you with the callous evil of its criminals and have you engaged in the dramatic life of Deputy Jack Davis in his dedication to caring for both strangers and loved ones who cross his path. For those not already familiar with the character of Emily Stone, she is prominent in Chase's first novels. Stone tracks the pedophiles, rapists, and killers who are terrorizing small towns, gathers evidence against them using technology and great instinct, and then anonymously leaves her files of proof with the local police department before moving on the next case. While Emily Stone does play an important role in Silent Partner, readers should not expect her to be featured as she was in Chase's previous work. Instead, we are introduced to Deputy Jack Davis. He is a man who is still haunted by what happened in the home of his childhood friend many years ago and, upon a chance reunion, realizes that the girl who watched her mother die at the hands of her father is still living the nightmare every day. The reemerging relationship between Davis and his childhood friend, Megan O'Connell, is set against a series of vicious murders that are carried out by men who seem to carry no remorse or sense of value to human life. It is during these scenes, in which Chase calls upon her expertise in the field of forensic psychology, that I believe her writing is at its finest. I found myself having a physical reaction to the brutality faced by some of the victims in the book and the killer's thirst for more violence and blood. And, the way in which Chase weaves her multiple storylines and characters together makes for a shocking ending. Even though I was anticipating a twist as the book progressed, the final scenes took me in a direction that I did not expect. The emotional heart of this book comes from the mutual love that exists between the humans and their dogs. From Jack Davis and his K-9 dog Keno to Megan and Eddie, whose need for an emergency trip to the vet is the only reason that the troubled woman can force herself to leave her home, the importance of a loyal dog is a theme throughout Silent Partner. In fact, this special bond is the inspiration for the book's title. Jennifer Chase often shares the love for her own dogs on her website and other writings, and I know the words used to express the adoration between dog and owner could only come from a person who carried those feelings in her heart. Silent Partner forms a definite break with the previous offerings by Jennifer Chase in both its style and perspective. Two constants in all of Chase's work, though, are the quality of the story development and the rich psychological insight. When you add a spotlight to members of our law enforcement who often go unheralded, the trained dogs, Silent Partner is another wonderful product. Whether you already count yourself among Jennifer Chase's followers and were waiting for the release of this new book or you are discovering this author for the first time, Silent Partner is a compelling read.
