Silver and Gold

Hearing her silvery soprano and inspired phrasing, fans from pop star Linda Ronstadt to country hitmaker Pam Tillis to bluegrass icon Ralph Stanley have recruited Claire Lynch to sing on their records, but she shines brightest when she leads her own Front Porch String Band (Larry Lynch, Missy Raines, Jim Hurst) on sets like this one. Firmly rooted in the acoustic bluegrass style, Lynch isn't held back by it, hitting contemporary country tunes like "If Wishes Were Horses" with the same energy she gives to the traditional "Hitchcock Railway." Lynch likes to swing too, and she reveals that passion on the lighthearted "Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring?" A non-traditional look at a familiar bluegrass subject surfaces in the solemn "Death Angel" and, with twisted humor, in "I'm Goin' Up." Lynch interprets bluegrass balladry at its insightful best in the headline recalling the story "Out Among the Stars" and the tribute to love's ups and downs in her original "Silver and Gold." Call this one bluegrass for the 21st Century.
