Elyne Mitchell (1913-2002) began writing for her children. Although the Silver Brumby books are her most famous, she wrote several others, mainly about horses. Passionate about the dramatic landscapes of the Australian Alps, her books convey the beauty and savagery of that area with a remarkable lyricism.

A violent stallion tries to force her into his herd. Men plot to capture and tame her. Owls hoot warnings and wisdom. A kangaroo helps her. There's romance, too—a handsome stallion is drawn to her. Caroline Lee's sensitive performance is an excellent match for the lyrical text. Her expressive voice is intimate and enchanting, quivering with fear, laughing with joy, sometimes trotting, sometimes slowing down to luxuriate in the beauty of the landscape.
