Clay Risen is a wonderful writer: witty, wise, authentic, authoritative. His introductory section on Scotch history and distilling is exemplary, not to be missed. Where he absolutely shines, though, is his smart and sassy, puissant and pithy descriptions of hundreds of malts: just the companion for an evening of tasting or a trip to the local outlet (or not-so-local duty free.) Sure, there are many good books about Scotch, but this one, written by a non-sentimental, no-nonsense American, for knowledgeable American consumers, takes the top spot on my shelf -- and is a worthy companion to his work on American whiskeys. Five stars!
