About the Author

Though born and raised in the south, L.J. Garland has lived on both the east and west coasts. She adores traveling, the latest adventures added to her Bucket List: Machu Pichu and Australia’s Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef.

Married to her best friend for over twenty years, she spends her time home schooling three rambunctious boys, editing in the epub industry, and writing stories that she hopes catches her readers’ imaginations as much as the characters and plotlines captivate her. In her spare time (what there is of it LOL), she has a multitude of hobbies, including building archery equipment from scratch and creating stained glass. She has a passion for anything that goes Boom!…from fireworks to high-powered combat rifles…it’s all good. She and her husband are both rated helicopter pilots and spent their 10th anniversary flying cross-country from east to west coast…an adventure she highly recommends.

A member of RWA, she has several published books, and is hard at work, brainstorming and writing her next romance story.

Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of two Debbie Gould and her mother moved to New Jersey, spending many happy years on her grandparents' horse farm. You'll sometimes find this setting as a backdrop in her work.

As a teenager, she and her mother found a new home in Vermont, where she currently resides. With a daughter in the Air Force (along with Debbie's six-year-old grandson), and two sons working for the family Well Drilling business, Debbie Gould now shuffles her time between a husband, full time job as a nurse and her writing career.

About seven years ago, while looking at over three hundred treasured books lining her shelves, she realized there was a multitude of stories of her own clamoring for release. Since then, she's seriously persevered in keeping the keyboard in constant motion.

With three published books, Debbie is now working with a partner, L.J. Garland. Together, they have finished one manuscript, Sins Of the Mind. Debbie has been a member of KOD, FTHRW, ELEMENTS and RWA Online.

Reviewed by: Victoria Book provided by: Publisher Review originally posted at Romancing the Book Sins of the Mind is the first book in the red River series by L. J. Garland and Deborah Gould. I chose this book because I enjoy spine tingling mysteries that keep you on your toes that mix in erotic romance. Ethan Parker is assigned to investigate a grisly murder because he is the best detective in town. Ethan is a big strong and smart cop. He is a quite person that is not quick to discuss sensitive subjects when he should be. Ethan has his new partner Grant Montgomery. Grant is a rookie cop who seems to have a chip on his shoulders. As it turns out Grant’s sister Abby was at one time a victim of Ethan brother’s. Abby Montgomery was the victim of a very violent crime. She is a strong woman who works every day to put the past behind her. It is apparent from the beginning of the book that the men around Abby are dying. She is involved somehow. Ethan works quickly to rule her out as a suspect. The next question is who wants to hurt Abby? The book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. The author did a wonderful job of created unique and engaging characters that stick with you even after you put the book down. I loved that as you got closer to the end of the story the more you were on the edge of your seat and hanging on each sentence. While the story was well written and very realistic, I wish the author hid the identity of the killer better. It was apparent halfway though who it was. I was very surprised that it did not occur to anyone to consider him/her. The rest of the ending was a surprise. This was a great start to the series and I cannot wait to see what the next book has in store!

Suspense books, in general, are not a genre I generally seek out. I find my success rate of enjoying them to be a lot of hit and miss. Some I have loved, some I have….not. That brings us to Sins of the Mind. I loved it! This book had so much going on, and it was organized and not at all hard to follow. It was really terrific. We start with Ethan who is a detective, and he is now following a bunch of gruesome murders. And I do mean gruesome. That aspect brings in a bit of the horror genre to this story. And of course, the murders turn serial, and the suspense is really amped up. Everyone is a suspect and no one is safe! And what do all of these murders have in common? The girl!! In one way or another she is connected to each of the men that are brutally murdered. But is she really connected or is it a coincidence? Abby Montgomery is a woman who has had some horrible tragedy in her past. But now she is trying to rise above it, just when all of these deaths start popping up. I really liked her character. Some of her reactions to things seemed a bit over the top, but then again, I have never been in her shoes so I can hardly judge. But it definitely lends to the fact that this woman is on thin ice with herself, and she is barely hanging on. And that’s why Ethan is so perfect. *sigh* Of course I loved Ethan. Big strong manly cop? Absolutely!! I really loved how tough he is. You can depend on Ethan, and I love that in a male lead. He has a bit of “typical” guy stuff going on, he isn’t as forthcoming with secrets as he should be. But his heart is in the right place, and that’s what comes shining through with this man. Now, there are some other characters in this story who shall remain nameless at this point, to avoid any spoilers, but they are horrible!! Like I said in the interview with the two authors, this story definitely is twisted in some parts. And I don’t mean the story twists, I mean the people are twisted! The murders are so grisly, you will definitely feel a bit of a shudder after each new body is discovered. But it is written so well, you feel like you are on the hunt with Ethan. You don’t get to know who the murderer is while Ethan tries to figure it out. And that was a surprise in itself! Secrets, oh my goodness, the secrets in this book. There were some points where I was just fearful that Abby and Ethan wouldn’t pair up. I was really rooting for them, I think they make a great pair. But Ethan isn’t completely able to escape his past, and neither is she. And when the past, present and future all collide it is definitely a big cluster of a mess!! The drama of their building infatuation and romance was terrific, and it was slow and steady enough that you really grew with these characters, and identified with their feelings for each other. When you get to the climax of the story you will definitely be on the edge of your seat. I really loved how nothing was as it seemed in this story, and each new surprise just drew me in closer and closer. I think fans of suspense and murder mysteries will really enjoy this book. I am definitely going to check out the next book in the series!

A truly creepy mystery with all the great spices of romantic suspense with the gory details of gruesome serial murders! Oh I really enjoyed this - I was peeved a little in the beginning as the romance wasn't moving at the normal romance speed but then the murders kept piling up and you begun to see they were all around Abby and that just got creepy. A good mystery has you changing your mind about who the killer is, and Sins of the Mind had me guessing. Also I got really invested in the characters, I hated Mikey, respected Ethan and liked Abby and was annoyed at Elliott ( geez, seriously who talks about themselves in third person!? ). I loved this novel, I've always been a fan of good serial killer mystery and with the romance aspect added I was sold! I can't talk too much about the plot without giving it away but you should know that while it takes while for the romance to get going it's yummy when it does blossom and the fact that the killer is stalking and brutalizing all the men who are in Abby's life is really creepy and creates wonderful setting for Ethan and Abby to realize they belong together. I loved Ethan's secret from Abby, it truly was something that could easily break any relationship - and I loved it that it was told flat out in the beginning instead of the whole I got a secret but the reader doesn't know it that just pisses me off... I liked getting into Ethan's head and this one was massive secret to keep and I loved how it ate him when he was with Abby or her brother. I highly recommend this for romance fans who love a good serial killer mystery!
