Lies. Betrayal. A double life.

Lola Anders isn't who she seems. Two years ago she ran away from the dangerous life she'd been living in order to stay alive and to escape the pain of losing someone close to her. She changed her name and reinvented herself into a good girl... at least part of the time anyway. A secretary by day and an escort by night, Lola lives a double life in order to maintain balance and survive. And things are going well until someone from her past shows up out of nowhere. Someone Lola thought was dead.

Usually I will buy any thing Jessica Sorensen writes but I really feel ripped off on this one, the first 1/3 of this book is the prequel titled Seduction & Temptation which is free, so beware fellow readers, this ones going to be shorter then you think.

Let me begin by noting that I am generally a fan of Jessica Sorensen's books. And that I am open to an author sort of moving between genres; sometimes we get some real winners when this happens. With all of this being said, though, I have to say that I did not find 'Sins and Secrets,' along with it's prequel 'Seduction and Temptation,'to be one of my favorite reads. While the concept of this book is a fresh one, there were several things that kept me from giving more stars. I will say that 'Seduction and Temptation' offered a good set-up to the story in 'Sins and Secrets,' and that it's always good to have back story to draw on. I had a difficult time connecting with any of the characters here; they were fairly one-dimensional, and not particularly well-crafted, in my opinion. Even though Lola's personality was defined by her upbringing, you know, nurture versus nature, there was not really one thing that made her sympathetic for me. And Layton, although he is definitely a romantic 'hero,' and obviously did what he did out of love for Lola, never really inspired any real feelings. The one stand-out, who I hope will be more present in future installments of the 'Sins' series, is Solana. She is an interesting one, and I would love to see more of her background and evolution, because I think that she could quite possibly be the most uniquely developed character in this storyline. Since character development is a HUGE thing for me when reading, I hold out hope that Jessica will continue to flesh out everyone in the series. I am interested to see where Jessica takes the plot with the rest of the series, and hope that we will see a more lushly developed and tightly written story in 'Lies and Betrayal.'

I feel like I have been waiting for this one for so long, and it was definitely worth the wait. There was a little surprise once I started reading, it contained the novella, Seduction & Temptation and it was great introduction to Lola and Layton.   Both Lola and Layton grew in a life that they didn’t ask for. Now grown, one has become part of the world, the other didn’t seem to be sheltered from it, but soon finds herself in the one world she doesn’t want to be a part of. When things don’t go according to plan, Lola’s life becomes a great big mess, and with people now after her, she runs. Even though she has stayed hidden for a while, the past doesn’t stay where it should, and it Layton can find her, that means others can too.   Lola was a strong and resourceful girl for sure. To stay under the radar for so long, I guess you would have to be. I wasn’t sure about her at first, just because of how “sheltered” she was from what her father was into. I can understand not know everything, but to know nothing. But I digress. As the story went on, I saw her strength and learning what all she had been through, I felt for her. She has blocked of emotion. Enter Layton, this is the one person who can actually make her feel. I liked him from the start, and it was clear that these two had a connection, not just now but since they were kids. Layton might be this big bad mafia man, but he was loyal to Lola and their interactions both emotionally and sexual was freakin awesome. There were a few others characters that I would like to learn a little more about and maybe will as the story goes on.   I read this in a about two hours or so, it was engrossing, I didn’t want to put it down. The plot was full of suspense and what would a mafia story be without violence, there’s no shortage of it. Lola has discovered so many things about her family, and the many secrets they have kept from her, some of which were revealed and others that kept me trying to figure right along with her. I liked the shocking addition to the cast of characters at the end, and I wonder where that lead and what it means for Lola and I can’t wait to see what happens next.   Sins & Secrets is a fantastic ride, with lots of steaminess, suspense and betrayals, how could it not be?!

It is a good start of another series by Jessica, just note the first part is the background story Seduction and Temptation I wish I knew that so I did not purchase both.

I was honestly a bit disappointed in this book. Jessica Sorensen is one of my go to authors. This one didn't quite get there for me. It left me intrigued enough that I'll buy the next one though. Note that the prequel is included in this book. I bought both not realizing that and wasted 0.99 on the prequel which I paid for twice.
