Overview

Solti by Paul Robinson

".a beautifully balanced assessment. The author has obviously drawn extensively on personal experience and he expresses himself with clarity, precision and a refreshing impartiality.Robinson displays a scrupulous knowledge of the scores and of the ethos of the works in question."

-Jeffrey Joseph, Music and Musicians, September, 1979. Excerpts from a review of the first edition of Solti.

When Sir Georg Solti died in 1997 he was at the height of his powers and one of the conducting titans of his generation. The Hungarian-born Solti conducted like a man possessed and orchestras responded in kind. In the 1960s he was chosen to make the first-ever recording of Wagner's monumental Ring cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic. For more than 20 years he headed the Chicago Symphony and under his leadership the orchestra's reputation grew by leaps and bounds.

Paul Robinson wrote the first comprehensive account of Solti's life and music in 1979. This new edition of Solti is completely revised and updated. In view of the many important recordings and films Solti made over his long career, this new edition includes a comprehensive Discography and a detailed Videography.
