Editorial Reviews

Whitney Scott
This is a collection of 30 memoirs, essays, and personal portraits concerned with the complex, loving, and often extraordinary relationships between lesbians and gay men. Frequently, these relationships are incredibly strong bondings that, despite occasional disruptions, endure over decades, as lovers come and go. Particularly noteworthy are Paul Monette's haunting and poignant portrait of his elderly mentor, Gert, the reputed lover of Katherine Cornell, leading lady of the American stage in the decades between world wars; Lucy Jane Bledsoe's mesmerizing, sometimes hilarious, and sometimes horrifying remembrance of a male college chum raped by the man who dates her female lover; Susan Fox Rogers' essay on mountain climbing and the "summit sex" caused by the "uncontrollable combination of adrenaline and hormones"; and Jewelle Gomez's account of the easy camaraderie she long ago felt with her father, Duke, and how she reclaimed it with her gay black "brothers." An excellent addition to gay and lesbian studies as well as general literature collections.
