Karen Kelly Boyce's "Sisters of the Last Straw: The Case of the Haunted Chapel" is a fun read for Middle School readers. From making a mess in the kitchen, running after escaping goats, and dealing with unfamiliar voices somewhere above the basement, this story has the makings of an enticing read for girls as well as boys. With Mother Mercy leading a convent of misfit nuns, there is no end to the trouble Sisters Krumbles, Shiny, Lacey, and Lovely get into. This is their last chance to do something they always wanted, serve as nuns despite their bad habits. Although I laughed at certain antics, the scenes stopped short of me laughing hysterically. Still, the message of being friends with others who have annoying habits and patiently working together to improve them is a great one. I highly recommend this book to young readers and look forward to the rest in the series.
