About the Author

Sally Lloyd-Jones is the author of the picture book How to Be a Baby, illustrated by Sue Heap, and its sequel, How to Get Married. She lives in New York.

Anita Jeram is the illustrator of Guess How Much I Love You, the Guess How Much I Love You storybooks, and You’re All My Favorites, all written by Sam McBratney. She has also illustrated several books by Amy Hest: Little Chick and a series about Sam and Mrs. Bear. Anita Jeram lives in Northern Ireland.

Riffing on the song “Skip to My Lou,” Lloyd-Jones (The House That’s Your Home) and Jeram (Guess How Much I Love You) suggest that using the bathroom is an event worth celebrating, as various creatures skip and prance their way to a “potty party.” A rabbit gets things started, but “Bunny’s not the only one/ skipping to the loo./ Look who else wants their potty!/ Quite a few...” The following pages are nothing short of a potty parade as kangaroos, a dodo, a frog on a scooter, a tutu-wearing elephant, an iguanalike monster, and others romp through the woods with one thing on their minds. Jeram’s characteristically delicate ink-and-watercolor artwork adds gentle humor throughout (at one point, a mouse unspools a roll of toilet paper like it’s a red carpet), and eventually the animals set up their chamber pots and training toilets in a clearing. An embedded mirror invites readers to join in: “Wait! Isn’t someone missing? I wonder... is it you?” Leaving the mechanics of using the potty to concerned adults, Lloyd-Jones’s singsong rhymes instead establish an “everyone’s doing it” aura of excitement as a means of encouragement. Toddler-PreS—With a play on the English term loo (or toilet), this title introduces a cast of animals—both real and fantastical—and their potties to young readers. But wait! Someone is missing! Who can it be? A rhyming text that is never too cloying keeps the action moving along as Bunny needs to go to the potty, thereby starting a menagerie parade through the fields and woods to the training potties. The rhyme starts to veer into "what else?" territory after introducing a big fat monster, a dinosaur, and "spooky wooky ghosties" that look like they wandered in from a Halloween title. Young children, however, will most likely giggle and relate to the general silliness that ensues. Jeram brings her soft ink and watercolor illustrations to life here. Bunny is awash in softly hued grays and pinks, while a charming elephant in a tutu and ballet toe shoes delicately parades through toward the final pages of a multitude of animals perching on their potties in the outdoors. And the surprise guest missing from the giant potty party at the end? A turn of the page reveals a spread with a smiling Bunny on the left and a sturdy mirror on the right to include young readers in the fun.
