The prologue and epilogue ruined this book when the stores were told before the narrative was. I was so excited about this book. I should have waited for the movie.

Blight's biograghy of Turnage and Washington gives you insight that no history class could ever have provided. You feel the anticipation of emancipation and you see the Civil War through a different set of eyes as you read their personal accounts. It is so personal that it really feels as though you are there.

This is a must read for every serious student of slave narratives. David W. Blight for the first time reprints the narratives of two former slaves John Washington and Wallace Turnage who were able despite all odds were able to escape from bondage during the Civil War. The stories of Washington and Turnage celebrate the human spirit and the riks that these two men were willing to take to be free.
