Sleepaway Girls by Jen Calonita

When Sam's best friend gets her first boyfriend, she's not ready to spend the summer listening to the two of them call each other "pookie." Sick of being a third wheel, Sam applies to be a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines camp in the New York Catskills. But what she doesn't realize is that it's not going to be all Kumbaya sing-alongs and gooey s'mores. If Ashley, the alpha queen of Whispering Pines, doesn't ruin Sam's summer, then her raging crush on the surfer-blond and flirtatious Hunter just might. At least she has playful Cole, who's always teasing her, but is oh-so-comfortable to hang out with, and the singular gang of girls that become fast friends with Sam-they call themselves the Sleepaway Girls.

I think that Sleepaway Girls, was an unforgettable, touching, and sweet book. While reading the book I felt like I was watching it all. Like I was at the camp watching everything happen to Sam. Wonderful wonderful book. I would highly reccommend this book to any teenager. Sleepaway Girls is a story that people will remember forever.

Samantha Montgomery doesn't want to deal with her best friend this summer, especially since all she does is cuddle with her "pookie" little boy friend. Sam decides to go to sleep away camp; her first time ever and she is going to work as a counselor-in-training. She soon makes a small group of friends that care about her and want to bring the vicious, popular Ashley down on her knees. From the first day Sam arrived at camp, Ashley has been terrorizing her so why not get her back? Within her days at camp, she makes friends, finds a crush, and gets a run for her money through all the obstacles she overcomes. And what if first impressions aren't always right? This book was a delight to read! Author Jen Calonita provides likeable characters with unique personalities while still focusing clearly on the plotline and using a zany twist in her writing. It was amusing and I was entertained the whole time! Being inside of Samantha's mind and reading about the choices she will, would, or might make is laugh-out-loud funny. Though the references are fun and quirky, they are very specific to what teens watch on television and listen to on the radio today so I don't know how long it would be up-to-date. With much potential and a pleasure to read, Sleepaway Girls will easily make it to the top! (This book is also a very clean read. I only found one mild reference in the whole book and it wasn't in a disturbing way. :)

I am a huge fan of "Secrets of My Hollywood Life", so when I heard that Jen Calonita had wrote another book, this one being Sleepaway Girls, I had to have it. So, the day it came out I bought it. I sat down, and finished it in one whole night. It was just that good. I fell in love with the characters, and their bonds. It was a great book! It had thrills, chills, fun, swimmming, arts and crafts, shots, Hunter, and Cole. Ahhh Cole. After reading this book i soo badly want a guy like Cole!! :) I had butterflies in my stomach at the very end. I very much hope their is a sequel :)

I loved this book! I could really connect with the main character Sam, not that I have been in commercials or anything... but I can relate to trying to get the hotest guy at camp and then falling for his bestfriend. The author also makes this a very relatable book, by discribing everything she (Sam) sees in away that tewns would discribe it now makes it fun and easy. You can really understand everything in this book and I absolutly loved it. Its a read tgats hard to put down it will keep you intrested until you finish it!!! READ IT!!

My Review: I think the main reason I was drawn to this book, was that it was set at camp. I have never been been, the closest I have ever got was watching the Friday the 13th franchise, which oddly enough is the reason I wanted to go to summer camp in the first place. Weird, I know, but at this point it should not come as a shock to anyone. Anyway, Sam is finally doing something for herself this summer, and that's attending Whispering Pines CIT program (which apparently stands for Counselor In Training). Sam finds that camp is much different than she envisions, when she butts head with mean girl Ashley, meets not one, but two boys she finds attractive, and meets some new best friends that dub themselves the Sleepaway Girls. So lets just get right down to it, the main thing that bothered me throughout the whole the book, was the fact that Sam did everything that her bestie wanted her to do. Later in the book, the Sleepaway Girls tell Sam she's a people pleaser, and for some reason that just bugged me, it seemed like Sam could not really function for awhile without Mal by her side. I also thought that Sam promising she would send all her friends back home recorded tapes cheesy. I get you miss them, but a postcard goes a long way. Other than those two instances, the book was really good, I think the author did a really great job at creating down to earth characters, and capturing a lot off different personalities that I'm sure you would find at camp. The story flowed nicely (although seemed to end pretty quickly), and I'm excited to read the next book in this series. Positive Elements: Sam "finds herself" at Whispering Pines, she grows as a person and makes new friends that challenge her. Negative Elements: There are some swear words in this book, but nothing you wouldn't hear on a cable show. Then, of course, you have mean girl Ashley who basically spends every waking moment trying to ruin Sam and her friends, even going as far as bad mouthing Sam in front of her peeps. Spiritual Elements: God is mentioned, and His name misused a few times. Other Thoughts: I'm disappointed that I never learned what Color War is. Yes, I could just look it up, but that takes the magic of out it.

Sleepaway Girls by Jen Calonita is a great book for young teens. Samantha Montgomery, a teen from Long Island, doesn't want to spend her summer being a third wheel around her best friend (Mal) and her first boyfriend. Sam takes a big step by applying to be a CIT (Counselor In Training) at Whispering Pines, a summer camp in New York Catskills (2 hours away from home). It's her first time doing something without her best friend, so it's a drastic change in her teen life! During her time at camp, Sam makes friends and enemies and crushes. Sam and her friends call themselves the "Sleepaway Girls" and together they have fun and dramatic experiences at camp. Sam learns more about herself—a "people pleaser" according to the Sleepaway Girls and Sam herself. She would fully enjoy her time at camp if it weren't for Whispering Pines' alpha queen, Ashley Hitchens, daughter of the camp director—who is out to humiliate Sam at every turn. There’s also dramatic romance involved— a hot, flirty guy (Sam’s crush at first sight) and a playful, yet comfortable boy to hang with. How will Sam deal with all these crises at once in addition to taking care of her 6-year old campers? Fortunately, Sam’s not alone—the Sleepaway Girls will stick through rough and tumbles all the way! However, will Sam ever learn to say “no” and do the things she loves and not be a people pleaser? Will her eyes avert from the wrong boy and choose the right one? Most importantly—will she take matters in her own hands and learn to use her own voice?  Overall, this book is amazing and greatly recommended for young teens to read over the summer or anytime! The characters are admirable and unique in their own ways—even Ashley!
