Everyone in Mangrove, Florida, knows Fire Chief Essien Dodd is a saint. He took care of his ex-wife until she died, is raising his teenage daughter alone, and is the kind of man who pulls kittens from trees. All in all, the man's a catch. But Roark Hammond has sworn off getting involved with a man who's been hurt before because he can't guarantee he won't hurt his prospective love again. If only he could get Essien out of his mind long enough to focus on anyone, or anything, else.
Strong emotions are in play. Essien is lonely but determined to focus on Ivy; Ivy wants her father to have a new life so much that, to his horror, she's trying to find him a man; and Roark is so scared of the present and past, he won't allow himself to commit. To have any chance of sleeping 'til sunrise and greeting each new day together, Essien and Roark will have to rethink how they're living their lives and focus on what's most important.

My first in this series, even though it’s book five. I wasn’t lost. But I could tell I was missing people’s information as this one was going along. Essien, is the town’s saint, raising his teenage daughter. Going back to his divorced wife, while she was dying. And now helping saving the town and the residents. Roark is the town doctor, problem is, he’s sick. Long term sick. So even though he would like to date Essien he’s staying away. Not wanting to put him or his daughter through that. This quick read shows us, that this town is in each other businesses. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes not so much. This was a fun tale, little sad. Then it ended. This wasn’t my favorite tale by this author. Or my favorite character’s. Maybe it’s because it was so short, only around 75 pages on my ereader. And most of that neither one of these two spent a lot of time together, alone. Always people around. So hard for me to get a fix on them as a couple. What I did enjoy was the way Ess would jump and help Roark no matter what. Just knowing. However, for me I had too many unlike. The way Roark assumes a relationship, when he leaves, but then acts all weird about it later. The ending. Or was it. Not a cliffy, but feels incomplete somehow. I liked the reference to another series when lawyers are called in. I’ve read that one so that was a nice twist for me. I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review by crystals Many reviewers.
This is book # 5 in the Mangrove Stories series. This book can be read as standalone novel. For full understanding of characters and series, I recommend reading the books in the series in order. Roark and Essien have been circling each other for some time. The whole town has followed their antics. It is getting to where even Essien's daughter cannot take it anymore. Essien has decided enough is enough. Can he love again? Is this where he goes all in? Well, after Roark has a scare - they find out for certain. They also find out who their friends are. Short and sweet, it is a reminder of true love and all that it can conquer. This book has a timeless feel to it. Such swift heat and happiness inside!
