Purpose: This is a superb example of a state-of-the-art, user-friendly textbook that covers disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tree, pancreas, and liver, as well as related topics of nutrition and peritoneal diseases.
Audience: It is intended for gastroenterologists, trainees in gastroenterology, primary care physicians, residents in medicine and surgery, and medical students. Those in the medical field with a more than passing interest in gastroenterology and hepatology should acquire this comprehensive and authoritative book. It is user friendly, beautifully illustrated, and contains a wealth of information. The editors and contributors are all eminent authorities in their respective fields.
Features: The two-volume textbook is divided into 11 sections that comprehensively address the biology of the GI tract and liver; nutrition in gastroenterology (with new chapters on bariatric surgery and its complications); symptoms, signs, and biopsychosocial issues; topics involving multiple organs; esophagus; stomach and duodenum; pancreas; biliary tract; liver; small and large intestine; and palliative, complementary, and alternative medicine. Many new authors have been added and the quality of the material is uniformly excellent. The figures in this edition are of exceptionally high quality and clarity. The online version is easy to access and navigate; several updates have already been added and complete references are available on the website.
Assessment: However difficult it may be in this day and age, this ninth edition is further improved and refined. The contents remain as academically sound as always, but the aesthetic appearance of has been much enhanced. It is a must for every gastroenterologist and hepatologist's bookshelf and the fast-moving pace of the field warrants a new edition. The online version is a significant advance and will enable this book to remain relevant in the UpToDate, easy access era.
