Overview

Roy Rogers has been an acclaimed master since his days working with John Lee Hooker, but never has the slide guitarist’s technical prowess been showcased as well as it is on the all-instrumental Slideways. “Avalanche” roars with Rogers's precise fingering; “Smoke & Mirrors” shimmers with syncopation; “Duckwalk” is a slide tribute to Chuck Berry; while “I’m With You” is a revved-up Chicago-style blues. There’s a quick trip down to Louisiana for “Cresent Funk” and “Gumbo Funk,” which feature former Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste. Two tunes also show the gentler acoustic side of Rogers: “Precious Moments” and “Swamp Dream.” Slidewayscovers a lot of bases, but Rogers never loses the bluesy core that drives his best work.

Editorial Reviews

Southwest Blues
Very few artists of Roy Rogers' caliber are able to pull off an eclectic piece of work and have it stand on noteworthy merits, especially an all-instrumental album. Rogers can make it work without hurting himself or sacrificing artistic integrity to endear himself to mainstream audiences.

I ordered this CD after hearing the artist on NPR. He has chops but to paraphrase Albert King¿s complaint about other players, he ¿just plays fast, ain¿t got no soul.¿ I don¿t hear it, anyway. The tracks are mildly entertaining but there¿s nothing moving or particularly rewarding, much less memorable. ¿Uninspiring¿ and ¿two-dimensional¿ are references that come to mind. I deleted it from my iPod after just a listening or two.
