Ten years ago

Chase Cooper grabbed the strap on Jag's backpack and gave a good hard tug, hauling him back to the sidewalk seconds before an SUV would have slammed into him harder than their rival school's linebacker at the last football game. The driver blared his horn as he sped by, offering Coop and his two buddies his middle finger.

"Fuck you," Mac said, retaliating with two fingers as he shuffled on the curb, daring the guy to come back and fight.

"Huh?" Jag said, lifting his eyes from his phone.

Coop shook his head. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?" He looked over Jag's shoulder, trying to get a glimpse of his phone. "What are you watching that's so important, anyway?"

Mac jumped from the curb. "Probably porn," he supplied.

Jag grinned. "Fuck you." He powered his phone down and shoved it into his low-hanging jeans.

"What the fuck is the matter with you, dude?" Coop checked traffic and darted across the street, the six beers he'd taken from his father's fridge banging together in his backpack.

"I need to get laid," Jag shot back. "That's what's the matter with me." Grinning, Jag shoved Coop toward a streetlight. "I don't get it on a daily basis like you do, asshole."

Coop moved around a lamppost and cut between houses, slipping through their yards to take a shortcut to Mari's house. "I told you, Mari and I are friends."

Mac snorted. "You mean fuck friends, right?"

Coop frowned and drove his hands in his pockets. "For the hundredth time, no, we don't fuck." Why was he even bothering to defend himself with these two wiseasses? "Just because we hang out, laugh, and have a great time together doesn't mean we're having sex."

Jag scoffed. "Then why is she always getting half naked in front of you?"

"She's a model." He pushed through her front gate. "She's used to wearing next to nothing."

Jag rubbed his hands together. "Just the way I like them."

They walked the pathway leading to Mari's front door, and Coop jumped onto the grass. "Come on," he said quietly.

Mac groaned. "Fuck's sake, Coop, why do we always have to go through the window? You got something against using the front door?" Keeping tight on his heels, his friends followed him around a bush to Mari's window.

The three of them had quite the reputation around town, and Mari's folks weren't all that fond of their daughter hanging out with them, which was why Coop went to great lengths to avoid a run-in with them. "I just prefer to use her window."

Jag bent and peered through the glass. "Is this the one you crawl in when she gets half naked for you?"

"Fuck off," Coop said, and quietly slid the glass up. The guys were wrong. He and Mari weren't having sex and never had. She might walk around half naked, and of course she was totally fuckable, but there was another girl he couldn't get out of his head — one who was off-limits and couldn't be bothered to give him the time of day anyway.

He threw his right leg over the windowsill and followed through with his hips, grunting at the tight squeeze.

"You might want to lay off those cheeseburgers, dude," Jag said.

Mac burst out laughing.

Closing his eyes, Coop prayed Mari's parents were heavy sleepers, because his ass hanging over the sill would make the perfect target for a load of buckshot. He pushed through, jumped to his feet, and waved the guys in.

Jag and Mac scrambled in behind him, giggling like little girls as they shoved at each other, then plunked themselves down on Mari's unmade bed. Coop glanced around, but Mari was nowhere to be found. A noise sounded from inside her big walk-in closet, and he motioned for the guys to be quiet.

Lowering his backpack to the floor, he crept across the carpet. Last week she'd sneaked up on him at the soccer field — damn near scared the shit out of him. She had a good laugh over that, but now tonight was payback.

He grabbed the double doors and flung them open. "Got ya ..." His voice fell off when his eyes connected with Mari's twin sister — Mari's very naked twin sister.

Oh, shit.

As the girl of his dreams went poker straight before him, the dress in her hands fell from her fingers, making a whooshing sound as it sailed to the floor.

"I ... uh ..." His voice must have snapped her back.

"What the hell!" She quickly put her hands over her body and turned sideways, curving her back and giving him the sweetest, sexiest view of her perfect ass. Fuck.

She might be Mari's twin, and he'd seen Mari's body numerous times, but it didn't compare to Julia's. His cock thickened, and at the base of his neck, his pulse jackhammered. Christ, he wanted her in the worst way, but she was his best friend's sister and he had been warned that she was off-limits.

"Get out," she said, a pink flush moving up her neck to her cheeks. "I'm not Mari."

His friends laughed, and Coop clenched his teeth, ready to kill them. But if he moved, he'd expose her, and he wasn't about to cause her any more embarrassment. He glanced over his shoulder. "Cut it out," he warned and widened his stance to block their view and give her the privacy she deserved.

"Now," she said.

He grabbed a fistful of hair. "Look, I'm ... I'm ... a ..."

She leveled him with a stare, those whiskey eyes with the honey flecks holding him in place. "Is 'pervert' the word you're looking for?" she asked.

He wanted to leave, to drag his eyes from her, but honor was waging war with his dick ... and losing. Plus he'd flung the doors open, and if he backed up now, his friends would see her. He grabbed Mari's robe hanging on the inside hook bedside him, handed it to her, and forced his eyes to the shoe box over her head as she snatched it from him.

"Listen, I'm sorry. I thought you were ..."

"I know who you thought I was."

Cotton rasped over her skin, and he envied the robe as she pulled it on. "If I'd have known it was you in here, I would have just left" — he paused and jerked his thumb over his shoulder — "and dragged those two assholes with me. I'd never want to walk in on you naked, Julia. Never. It was a mistake."

"I know," she said, her voice going so low, he had to strain to hear it. "I'm not my sister."

His gaze darted back to hers, and his throat tightened when he saw the pained look on her face. What the hell? Did she think she wasn't as beautiful as Mari, as desirable? That he would have just left, because her nakedness was repulsive or something? She might not be as outgoing or popular as her sister, but that didn't mean he didn't want her — or didn't want to see her naked. Because hell yeah, he did. Right now just wasn't the right time, and he was trying his damnedest to be respectful, no matter how thick his dick was or how badly it was begging him for a little action.

"Julia," he said, touching a strand of her long dark hair. "I didn't mean —"

"What's happening here?" Mari said from her doorway. Coop spun around and found Mari staring at him, dressed in a barely-there bikini, her hands on her hips. She cocked her head. "Is there something I should know?"

"I thought she was you," Coop explained.

Julia pushed past him, "I was looking for that dress I lent you when your boyfriend found me. He didn't know it was me until I told him."

Mari rolled her eyes. "You'd think you could tell us apart by now."

He could. They were identical, but to him they were night and day. "Wait, I can tell —"

"And you never have to worry about anything happening." Julia turned and met his glance straight on. "He's not my type."

Mari zeroed in on his backpack on the floor and bounded toward it. "Did you bring the beer for the beach party?"

No longer in the mood to party, he watched Julia disappear. Christ, he might have just saved Jag from getting run over, but he was the one feeling like he'd just been steamrolled.

Present Day

Julia Blair didn't like surprises, and she liked cryptic messages delivered after midnight even less. She shut the door behind the stranger.

The old wooden floors creaked as she made her way back down the hall of her condo and into her living room. Fighting off a shiver, she tugged her cotton robe tighter around her waist and pushed aside the case files she'd been going over. She sat down in her comfy recliner, read "Ms. Blair" on the envelope, and then turned it over in her hand. She honestly had no idea who'd be delivering a letter to her so late at night, but couldn't discount the possibility that it had come from McGinley and Gregors, the law firm where she worked.

In the window behind her sofa, the air conditioner clanked and coughed like an asthma patient, and she nearly jumped out of her recliner. Living alone smack-dab in the middle of downtown Halifax, she always exercised caution, and at first she wasn't even going to open the door. But when she peeked through her curtains and spotted the courier van, she went ahead and answered, figuring it might be the files she'd been expecting.

Inside, she found what appeared to be an invitation from the owner of a dude ranch. Crinkling her nose in surprise, she read the script. This had to be a mistake. Who would be inviting her to a one-week, all-inclusive vacation to a dude ranch in Alberta beginning this Saturday night, a mere two days away? She sank deeper into her chair, put her feet up, and searched her memory bank. She didn't know anyone in Alberta, let alone anyone who owned a dude ranch. Could it have been an old client?

She grabbed her tablet, punched in the information, and discovered that the ranch and airline voucher were indeed legit. Intriguing. She dug deeper around the ranch's website, hoping to figure out who owned it, but her search came up empty. She peered into the envelope and pulled out a slip of paper. On it she read, "A week of fun and relaxation from your high school secret admirer."

High school secret admirer?

She went on to read the cryptic words, "I'll even watch High in the Sky with you," and stiffened. Since High in the Sky was her favorite movie, whoever sent this invitation knew her very well.

But who?

She thought about the crowd she'd hung with years ago. They all knew she'd loved that particular movie, but she couldn't imagine any one of the guys from her clique having a secret crush on her or sending her such a mysterious invitation. The invite had to be for her impetuous sister, Mari, who shared the same tastes as Julia. As a swimsuit model, picking up and flying off to exotic locales was something her sister did on a regular basis. She wasn't in one place long enough to bother with an apartment, and just last month, while in between stints — and parties — she'd spent close to three weeks living in Julia's condo.

Unlike Mari, Julia liked a quieter lifestyle, and wasn't into wild gatherings or casual one-night stands. But the truth was, taking the edge off herself always left her feeling alone, miserable, and in need of the real thing.

She'd spent so much time building her career, she rarely had time for a social life. She'd practically given up on the dating scene, and sometimes wondered if she really was just a jerk magnet.

Her sister was always attracted to successful, handsome men who doted on her — men Julia would love to date. Well, except for that self-centered soccer star from high school who had it all. Looks. Brains. Charisma.

The two were always joined at the hip, hanging at each other's houses and partying together after soccer games. Not that Julia was jealous. She wasn't. Not at all. And she certainly had no desire to live a day in her sister's shoes. Nope, not one little bit. What would she want with a well-known playboy like Chase Cooper, anyway? A guy who had never bothered to give her a second look. Well, except for the one time he'd caught her naked. Then again, he'd thought she was Mari, until she'd set him straight.

Julia let loose a long, slow breath and thought about the real reason guys never spared her a glance. She and Mari might look alike physically, but on the inside, they were completely different people. Julia was dubbed the smart, studious, dedicated sister and worked incredibly hard to get where she was. Mari, on the other hand, was labeled the talented and funny one. She was like a burst of sunshine to all those she touched. There was no denying that her vivacious and outgoing nature had helped play a significant part in her good fortune and plush job.

It was a cliché, Julia knew, but she'd grown up and lived in her sister's shadow long enough to understand the preconceived notions placed on twins. They'd both been stereotyped early on. Now, as a lawyer and a model, the two had gone on to fulfill those predetermined roles.

She read the invitation again. Could it have been meant for her? Whether it was or not, and no matter how tempting it sounded, she didn't have time to drop everything and fly halfway across the country to enjoy a week of R & R with some secret admirer, especially with the high-profile case going before the judge next week. She crinkled the invitation into a ball and tossed it into the trash. If it was for Mari, she was away at some exotic locale shooting a magazine cover and wouldn't be able to make it anyway. And if it was for her, well, she wasn't about to give it another thought.

* * *

Chase Cooper hadn't seen Mari Blair since high school, but it didn't take a whole lot of investigative work for his buddy Jag to discover that she was living in a downtown Halifax condo. Since he found no sign of a husband or children, Coop went forward with his plan to see if he could get her to the ranch — to discover if they could have a future together.

But as he finished securing his gelding in the end stall, he couldn't help but feel a bit anxious about their half-cocked plan. Nor could he help but question his logic as he casually strolled back toward the main lodge.

He took the stairs two at a time up to his private quarters at the far end of the lodge. Heading for the bathroom, he stripped off his sweat-dampened clothes, dropping them in a pile on the tiled floor. As he reached into the shower to turn on the water, his thoughts drifted to Julia Blair, but he shook his head to clear them. After inviting Mari to the ranch, the last person he should be thinking about was her quiet twin sister, the time he walked in on her naked, or how she informed Coop he wasn't her type.

Coop stepped into the shower and grabbed the soap. As he lathered his body, he tried to keep his thoughts on Mari. He recalled the time his group of friends went to Hubbard's Cove. Mari had stripped down that night and had invited Coop into the water with her. He could have gone for it, but never did. Contrary to what everyone thought, he and Mari had never dated, which went against high school protocol, considering he was the captain of the soccer team and she was head cheerleader. Still, they were pretty tight friends back in the day, climbing through each other's bedroom window to hang out or taking in the midnight show when no one else was around.

So why had he never asked her out? Because back then it wasn't Mari he was interested in. No, the truth was, he had it bad for her sister Julia. She ran in completely different circles and wouldn't give him the time of day. In fact, she seemed to despise him after he'd found her in Mari's closet naked. Even if she didn't hate him, there was nothing he could do about his attraction to her. Back in the day, he'd been best friends with her sister, which meant Julia was completely off-limits.

Hell, since getting close to Julia had been off the table, he should have just asked Mari out — to discover sooner rather than later if there could be something more between them. Instead he waited ten long years to do it. He'd never found anyone he enjoyed hanging out with more, which was why he and his two pals, Jag and Mac, had put together an asinine plan to fly the girls from their youth — the ones they thought had gotten away — to the ranch, to see if they could have a future.

He ran the soap over his body, hurrying to get ready before the plane arrived. As he soaped, his cock thickened. Only problem was that as he stroked himself, it wasn't Mari he was thinking about.

It’s short, it’s sweet, it’s HOT! Chase Cooper is a successful Sports Medicine doctor, and a weekend cowboy. He’s been missing something in his life lately, and wants to see if he can find happiness. He and his buddies decide to invite “the one that got away” to spend a week with them at a dude ranch. — When his guest’s twin sister shows up instead of her, will Coop admit that Julia’s the one he always liked in high school anyway? Will they give in to their attraction, or will she turn around and go back home immediately when she realizes the invitation was actually meant for Mari? ** Received free in exchange for an honest review **

4 star Jag, Tyler, and Coop decide to send invites out to the one that got away. Jag’s private Investigative Company will track down the girls and they will come up with plans to win the girls over. What could go wrong? Each woman gets an anonymous invite to working dude ranch for a week of R&R. Will the woman even show up? This is Julia and Chase’s short story. He sends an invite to his best friend. An invite shows up at Julia’s condo about a free trip to meet a secret admirer. What she gets is Chase. Chase was Julia’s sister’s best friend years ago. She realizes that Chase sent the invite to her sister and not her. Will she stay anyway or will she leave before Chase has a chance to explain? Or will she stay and win over the cowboy for herself? I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I recommend this book.

This passionate novella is the first installment of the Playing For Keeps series. It is nostalgic, sweet and yet at the same time playfully sexy. Cathryn Fox has created two wonderful and guarded main characters plops them on a Canadian Dude Ranch and we see them develop and open up during the course of the story. "Slow Ride" briskly takes you on a love story ten years in the making - and it's worth every second. I mean, who doesn't love a cowboy? Cathryn Fox's "Slow Ride" is at times contradictory - to describe. It's easy yet complex. Nostalgic and very much in the Now. Sweet and Racy. It touches on a serious subject in a heartrending way yet facilitates a deeper understanding and character growth. The characters begin the story closed off and protective of their feelings and as the novella unfurls so do their emotions. I can't wait to read the next installment of the Playing for Keeps series. To read the entire review please visit: This novella is from my personal library, which means I bought it therefore it is a honest review.

This is my first read by Cathryn Fox, and I must say while this may be a novella, it sizzles with action, sex, and romance. The depth of the plot line is surprising given the short length of the story. And yet, I was left completely satisfied with the character development and couldn't help falling in love with Coop and Julia as they stumbled their way into love. After a night of drinking, three friends - Coop, Jag, & Mac - decide it would be a good idea to invite the ones that got away down to their dude ranch for a week to see if sparks would fly or sizzle out. Chase Cooper sent an invitation to his gal friend from high school - a girl named Mia whose twin sister was Coop's secret crush. When the invitation arrives, it's Julia who receives it. Having no idea who it's from, she decides on a whim to show up in her sister's place. As she walks off the plane, she is shocked to see Coop waiting. The truth is - she's always had a crush on him too. And so their story begins. The next week is spent getting to know each other - both in and out of bed. It's obvious they are sexually compatible, but Julia wants someone to want HER, not her sister. Coop is looking for a permanent relationship, and he believes he's found it in Julia. But mishaps, misunderstandings, and secrets threatened to destroy the relationship before it gets off the ground. Can Coop convince Julia that she's the one he wants in only a week? Is it too late to catch the one that got away? Slow Ride is a sweet, sinfully sexy story about second chance romances. It's well written and flows beautifully. If you like your cowboys smokin' hot & all kinds of trouble and your sex all over the place, this is the book for you! Sweet, erotic, sizzlin' hot . . . A Must Read! *Many thanks to Entangled Publishing for this ARC via Netgally.

3.5 Stars ~ A hot little novella, which will leave you wanting more. Slow Ride is the first novella in Cathryn Fox’s Playing for Keeps novella series. The series focuses on three best friends who reminisce about the one high school girl who got away and their plan to get her back. In high school, Chase Cooper was captain of the soccer team and Mari Blake was head cheerleader. The two were always hanging out together, sneaking into each other’s bedrooms. While everyone thought they were an item, they were merely just best friends without benefits. The actual object of Chase’s affection was Mari’s twin sister, Julia. Unfortunately, Julia was his best friend’s sister, making her off limits. They ran in different circles and the one time the two were actually alone together, Julia told Chase in no uncertain terms that he was not her type. Flash forward ten years and Chase and Julia are about to get a second chance at a love story that never was. While I enjoyed Slow Ride, I did have some issues with it. I will not deny this was a hot little novella, but the issue of Julia not knowing how far Mari and Chase went and the extent of their relationship, but still sleeping with him bothered me. They’re sisters, that’s a line you don’t cross without getting clearance to do so first. Due to the length of the story, I wasn’t able to form a true connection with the characters. Julia and Chase seem like nice people but what really got them to this point in their lives? Slow Ride is a happy for now story. I would have preferred to have a happy ever after ending. But, I like the premise of this series and I’m looking forward to reading Wild Ride and Sweet Ride. **Received a copy from Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest unbiased opinion.**

2.5 didn't-really-work-for-me Stars Well, this was a short, somewhat sexy read. There’s this guy, Chase, who was best friends with a girl in high school while secretly crushing on her identical twin sister Julia. After a rather embarrassing encounter, Julia who always thought Chase liked her sister, told him in no uncertain terms that he was not her type. Now some years later, Chase is going through some difficult family times and started to regret his bachelor life. So he invites her high school best friend to his dude ranch thinking maybe getting along with someone is the way to start a relationship. Unbeknownst to him, his invitation falls in Julia’s hands, so when the girl of his dreams comes out to his ranch, he can’t believe his luck. He’ll now only have to prove to Julia that she was always the girl in his heart, and he was never interested or involved with her twin… Good luck with that. Julia is a serious, work oriented lawyer. Always cast as the serious, responsible twin, she kind of let her life pass by, so when she gets an invitation from a past secret admirer, she does something spontaneous for the first time in her life. If only Chase knew he was the boy in her every fantasy, now she’ll have the chance to pretend being the fun twin and spends a week long having the best sex of her life. Well, them having a lot of sex in a lot of different locations is pretty much all I can say for this story. The characters didn’t have a lot of depth, the family situation, while painful in real life, was a bit over played as was the aura of mystery surrounding it (total over kill in my opinion). Julia was a little too insecure and both of them suffered from lack-of-communication syndrome, which as usual drove me bonkers. As I didn’t connect with the characters a lot, the sexy scenes weren’t that fantastic… and there were a couple of spanks and even a riding crop that didn’t really go at all with the story line. I still don’t get this need from some authors to kink-up their books. This wasn’t a bad book, it just didn’t really work for me. My dad use to have this super stupid saying when the weather was mild “it must be 0 degrees, because it’s not hot nor cold”… well, I kind of felt this way about this read. *I received a complimentary copy from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review*

I really liked the idea of Coop trying to reunite with the one who got away. Second thoughts emerge, but Coop is in for a surprise when Julia shows up instead of her twin. Julia wants to turn right around when she's Coop because she knows that her wanted her sister. Can Coop convince Julia to stay an experience the delights he has to offer and she is the one his body craves? Julia sees little glimpse of the true Coop, but how can he possible fall for her. Can these two take advantage of the chance fate has given them? I liked getting to know Coop because every layer revealed makes you fall more in love with him. Julia living in her twin's shadow she deserves what Coop is offering. Can't wait to read the other two books in the series.

Chase Cooper and a couple of his other high school friends decide to contact girls from their pasts and invite them to the ranch for a week long vacation with them. Chase always had a crush on his best friend Mari's twin sister Julia, but not only was she off limits but she also said he "wasn't her type". He decides to send his invite to his best friend Mari but Julia gets it and shows up instead. I really enjoyed this one but I wish it was just a little bit longer. This is a pretty short story. I was able to read it pretty quickly in one sitting. The story takes place in just a week's time so I think instead of skipping a few days, it would have made the story a little bit stronger to talk more about their time together even if it would have added more pages. I still enjoyed this one though, and I would definitely read the others in the series.

3 “Heck, what girl didn’t love a cowboy, right?” stars Chase Cooper had a female best friend, who was one of a twin. She was a vivacious party girl, and although they never took things over the friend line, they enjoyed each others company. Chase had, however, always coveted the quiet twin, Julia, but never given himself permission to pursue her. 10 years on, he’s in a great place, but feeling lonely, and wonders if his best friend could have been the one, if he had taken things further. He sends an all expenses paid invite to Mari, insisting she spends the week at his ranch. Julia Blair contemplates an invite from Chase Cooper, having always held a secret torch for him. She pulls up her sassy pants, and decides to go, only to discover that the invite was for her sister, Mari. Not to be put off, she resolves to conjure up her inner femme fatale, in an attempt to entice the Coop she has always quietly adored. This was a whirlwind of a read, which went loft-y at a supersonic speed. The characters were appealing, especially Coop *sigh*, but I felt there were elements to his story that could have been enlarged upon, rather than edged in at the last minute. Cowboys n Twin Sisters along for this Ride=Good Book Chase Cooper is a successful doctor and he plays a weekend cowboy but he just isn’t a happy camper in real life. He thinks going thru a bunch of women would fix him but it doesn’t . He then realizes maybe settling down with a nice girl for a change would get him out of the slump he is in would work and he asks his friend from high school to come visit him and she agrees but instead her sister Julia, shows up- her TWIN sister; the one that HATES HIM. OMG this book had me rolling in minutes. I loved how the MC had this backstory of history and a lot of misconception to work out and in between the chemistry was fantastic. There was some lagtime in between but this did provide to be a quick read and the ending was awesome. Chase was afraid of making a move years ago because this was his friend’s sister, even though the friend was a girl. Julia was afraid she was considered 2nd best in Chase’s eyes because she is not her sister. There was wonderful , sweet moments that were great. Loved this story and cannot wait to read another story by this author. *A gifted copy was provided by the publisher for my honest review* My rating: 4.4 stars ****

This is hot romance! This book is the first in Cathryn Fox's Playing for Keeps series. Chase Cooper was lonely. He wanted more in his life than just the random date here or there. Those weren't working any longer. So he and his best friends came up with a plan. They each anonymously invited one woman that they felt they let get away from them when they were younger to come and spend a week with them. Without expectations! Just to have fun and see what happens. Julia had no idea what made her get on that plane, but she had and she intended to live the next week like she was someone else. No rules or deadlines. She would do just what she wanted and nothing more. Slow Ride was fun and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the other books in this series. I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Chase Cooper is a successful doctor and decided to invite his best friend from high school Mari to spend time with him and his friends on vacation. There is a mix up and Mari’s twin sister Julia ends up on the ranch by mistake. She decides to stay and enjoy her time with Chase and they begin a very hot and steamy vacation together. Will their new romance survive when they return to real life? This is a smoking hot book that features a mistaken identity, a western setting, and a well written plot. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to 18+readers. I was given a free copy for an honest review by

Slow Ride… does anyone else start singing that as soon as they read those words? I know I do! However, we aren’t here for the song, we are here to talk about the brand new novel Slow Ride by Cathryn Fox. This book starts a new series called Playing for Keeps, it does have an HEA and it can be read as a standalone. Although if you’re like me, you’re probably going to want to find out what happens with our main hero’s buddies. So you’ll be reading the next two. This story in particular is told from a dual third person point-of-view. I also want to note that it took me about two and a half hours to read it, probably less but I’m giving it some leeway. So it’s perfect from a commute, car trip, or plane ride where you’ve got a few hours to lose. Jumping straight into this book, as I said, it’s short, so there might not seem like a lot of content to go over, but there is more than you’d think. Mind you, I’m going to try to keep this short because too much of it is spoilers and I don’t enjoy those. Our heroine is a woman named Julia, she’s always felt she was in the shadow of her supermodel twin. Yeah, twin, and they look exactly alike, but she still doesn’t think she’s anywhere near as good as her sister. In high school that was an issue, the one guy she liked, well she pretty much told him he wasn’t her type. Why? Because he’s her sisters best friend! So she grows up, years pass and Julia becomes her own woman. She’s a successful lawyer and firmly on her own to feet. Coop, our hero in Slow Ride, gets talked into inviting his high school best friend to his dude ranch by his two best friends. One night of drunkenness leads to the three of them wanting to find out if the one who got away is the one for them. Problem is, for Coop, it’s not his best friend, and it never was. He’s always had a thing for Julia, but you don’t take your best friends sister! It’s in the code! So he instantly regrets inviting Julia’s sister out. It’s a complete shock to both Julia and Coop when she steps off the plane and they see each other. Not what they were expecting and on Julia’s part, she can’t wait to leave again. But Coop doesn’t want her going anywhere, it’s finally his chance to explore what might have been years ago. After some fast talking on Coop’s part, Julia decides to stay for the week. Hah, she needed a vacation anyway. Things transpire from there. This book is definitely a second chance romance. I liked the characters, and it mainly focuses on these two, what they are going through and a bit of outside situations. You don’t see much in the way of co-stars, and the book is relatively fast. For me, it was a short read, as I stated above. That being the case, a very solid three stars. If it’d had a bit more content, I think I’d have enjoyed it more.

4.5 Stars As teens, Julia was Coop's best friend's sister and you never messed with a best friend's sister, even if you'd always been secretly in love with her. 10 years have passed and he invited his old high school best friend, Mari, to his ranch just to check and see if there were any sparks between them that they never realized back in high school. But when she stepped off the plane, it wasn't Mari but her twin sister Julia! Best. Mix-up. Ever. Coop is so cute with his ten year crush still going on. Julia is still a little shy. She's a stand off to the side instead of a front and center type of girl. Coop is going through a lot and wonders if Julia will be understanding or will she run. Great story! I can't wait for the next two books in the series. Received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed is my own.

Originally posted on my blog: Tangled Up In Books I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. In no way did this sway either my review or my rating. For only 87 pages this sure packs the punch of a full length novel. It was incredibly hot and intense yet at the same time achingly sweet. The perfect Brazen to pick up when you want to get through something very quick yet still leave you feeling the satisfaction of reading a full sized book. The blurb is a bit misleading, but I'm actually happy with that. What I read was so much better than what I was expecting. I was expecting Julia was going to try to trick him into thinking she was her sister or something but thankfully that wasn't the case. I mean it would've been cute still I'm sure but I absolutely loved what I read instead. I feel like this, in a way, is pretty much a second chance romance. Coop was completely hung up on Julia in high school but since her twin was his best friend he put her in the off limits zone. You don't date your best friend's sister. On the other hand Julia always had a thing for Coop as well, but she, like everyone else in their lives, assumed there was more to his relationship with her sister so she buried her feelings for him as well. I loved it! It was such a perfect premise filled with the promise of feels. Coop and Julia were great characters. I loved how open Coop was and how he wore his emotions and didn't really hide anything. How he wasn't actually afraid to feel and actually wanted someone to share his life with. It's always a breath of fresh air compared to the fear of commitment characters we're normally bombarded with. Julia was so sweet and adorable. I loved how even though she was an identical twin and in a lot of ways felt 2nd best compared to her twin, she was still so positive and selfless and giving. She was just a really good person. It didn't take long for things to heat up between these two and when they did? Explosive! Those were some pretty freaking hot and intense scenes. I adored everything about this book. From the characters, to the storyline and the setting of the ranch. It was over way too quickly and I really wanted more of Coop and Julia. But I'll have to satisfy myself with two of Coop's best friends and their "ones that got away" that release in the next two months. I'm really looking forward to Mac and Jag's books!! Thanks to Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!

I really enjoyed this story that tells of the one that got away, who finally gets caught! Chase is best friends with Mari in high school but it's her twin sister Julia who's been his secret crush, so secret that when she answers an invitation to a week at a ranch several years later, she can't believe he meant it for her and not her sister. But while Chase might have initially wanted Mari to come, he's beyond thrilled that it's Julia that showed up instead and that he'll finally get a chance to show her how he really feels. There are several sexy scenes between them as their chemistry is off the charts together, and I enjoyed seeing them both open up to each other about their true feelings. For a novella, the setting was well described and interesting (loved that it was a Canadian location!) and the characters were interesting and well developed. It was a short, sexy, fast paced read. 4 stars.

Julia Blair has always come in second place to her beautiful twin sister Mari, especially when it comes to catching the attention of the opposite sex. For so long she has poured herself into to work as a lawyer, and put her lackluster love life on the back burner. So, after she receives an invite to a dude ranch, for a one week getaway from her long time crush, she decides to find out why after all these years has he suddenly taken an interest in her, only to find out mid-trip that the invite was meant for her sister... Chase Cooper and his friends decide to try and spice up their love life's by each inviting "the women who got away" to come and stay at their dude ranch that they own together for a one week getaway. Chase decides to invite his good friend Mari, in hopes of seeing if she is truly the one that got away or just someone who was only meant to be his friend. But he immediately regrets sending the invite because he knows in his heart that it was always her twin sister that he was attracted to, and the girl he let slip away because she was off limits. But what he thinks is a mistake turns out to be a blessing in disguise... I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, it captivated my attention right from the start and had me smiling like a fool the whole way through. I love reading second chance love stories and I have to say this one DEFINITELY hit the spot, Ms. Fox is a master at her craft! I highly recommend you add this book to your reading list, it's sure to satisfy all your reading needs, and then some! This short story left me feeling all kinds of good. I love the way that this all panned out for Chase and Julia. Cathryn Fox did a wonderful job at letting us as readers expect the unexpected. She did not fail to deliver on that note. Such a good quick, steamy read! Chase is a cowboy that has bought a ranch along with the help of his brothers and sisters to have for his ailing mother with Alzheimer's. They all agreed that having her in a place with familiar surroundings would help the Alzheimer's and make her feel more at home and comfortable. Chase has taken a leave from his job of being a Sports Medicine doctor to help care for his mom. Chase is also ready to try and find his Mrs. Cooper and sends an invitation to his old high school fling (although they never dated back then). When the invitation reaches her sister, Julia instead, Chase couldn't have been happier for his luck. Julia is the one that he has had feelings for all along but did not want to make his best friend mad by dating her sister. When Julia arrives at the ranch, Chase has to convince Julia to give him a chance to prove to her that she needs a week of rest and relaxation with him on the ranch. Julia thinks he is crazy, but she decides to give it a shot. Julia fits right in with the ranch life and surprises Chase. He never dreamed that Julia would fit into this life style so well and that the both of them would feel like they are right at home. Once Chase and Julia give into their attraction for each other, the sparks never have a chance to cool off between them. Chase shows Julia an awesome time and even takes her back to some of his old stomping grounds so that she will have an idea of where he grew up. So, how will things turn out for Chase and Julia? You must read this story to find out!! I was so happy at the end of this story that I wanted to book to be longer so I could get more of Chase and Julia. Thanks Cathryn Fox for a great short story!! I look forward to more from this series!!

I had a really rocking review for this... I can't find it, so bare with me. Slow ride is the first of the playing for keeps books. Chase Cooper, full time dr. part time rancher is bored. Him and his 2 best friends and fellow ranchers concoct an idea to invite their 3 past loves for a week at the ranch to see if anything can be rekindled. Problem is Chase doesn't have one. So he invites his best female friend from hs out. He is pleasantly surprised when her twin Julia shows up. Julia instantly realizes the mix up, but is convinced to stick around. It's not long before Chase shows Julia how happy he is the wrong sister showed up and how hot and heavy they can steam up the room. This fast paced, short read never gets dull. Leaving you begging for more of the yummy part time ranchers.

Are you looking for a hot, sexy novella? Then look no further than Slow Ride by Cathryn Fox. When this book was originally released in 2013 under a different title, I really liked it. This version is slightly different and equally as engaging. The main characters, attorney Julia Blair, and sports doctor and part-time cowboy, Chase Cooper, are likable, real and have a ton of chemistry. Julia and Cooper have known each other since high school. In fact during that time, Cooper was best friend's with Julia's funny and outgoing twin sister Mari, even though they both secretly harbored a crush on one another. Now years later, Cooper and his two buddies are feeling nostalgic and decide to contact the women that "got away" for a chance of happiness. Cooper and his friends own and operate a dude ranch. Julia arrives at Cooper's ranch completely bewildered. She knows that Cooper was expecting Mari, not the quiet, conservative Julia. As luck would have it, Julia is the one who Cooper really wants. Their relationship starts out very casually, but by the end of the week, they are madly in love and experiencing the best sex of their loves. This is an extremely steamy novella. I just loved how Julia and Cooper came together, while slowly sharing their secrets with one another. If you are looking for a quick-paced, well-written, sexy novella, give this book a shout. 3.5 - ”In my world… the woman screams first.” Stars! Slow Ride is a quick, sexy read. I flew through this one in my lunch hour, so if you are looking for a little escapism from your work day, I recommend you give this title a try. Nothing beats a good Second-Chance romance, especially if the girl in question is your old school friends twin sister. Chase and Julia, were hot together, and this novella hit the ground running. ”I’ve waited too long for this, wanted you for too long.” Julia is a little wary as she always believed that it was her twin sister Chase always had the hots for, but as the book progresses you come to see it was always the other way round. One misunderstanding back in school and both of them were left with the wrong impression. Chase wants Julia for the long haul, but can he convince her to stay, especially after he reveals the main reason he owns a Dude Ranch with his best friends Jag and Mac. This is my second book by this author and once again she didn’t disappoint. Looking forward to reading more from the Playing for Keeps series, when Wild Ride releases in October 2015. I didn't realize when I started reading this that it was a reissue but a couple of pages in I knew I had read this before. This is one of those stories you don't forget!! I loved it the first time I read and I love it now. When three friends decide to invite the "ones that got away" to their ranch for the week, Chase "Coop" Cooper decides to invite his high school best friend. They never dated but he's wondering what if they had??? Image his shock, and secret delight, when her twin sister Julia show's up instead. Will the week be a bust or will the long, never indulged attraction win out?? This is a great story and one you won't soon forget either. I definitely recommend it.
