This is the fifth book in the First & Ten Series from author Jean Joachim, and the first book in this series that had me actually wondering if our couple would find their HEA. Bullhorn Brodsky is as tough as they come, on the field, but in reality he is a big, huggable, teddy bear with a heart of gold. He has fallen, hard, for Samantha Drake, sister of his teammate, Devon Drake. Devon is not happy about this situation. He has spent too much time in the locker room with Bull, listening to stories of his sexual exploits and his love em’ and leave em’ attitude. Consequently, Devon has spent a lot of time warning Sam that Bull will only break her heart once he’s had her. Sam’s attraction to Bull has her trying her best to ignore Devon’s tales of woe, but finds it hard to do while she is living under his roof. She decides to strike out on her own and she and Bull begin dating and getting to know each other in earnest. Just when they are starting to get closer, Bull’s former fianceé, who left him at the altar to marry someone else, unexpectedly pops back into his life and Sam finds herself doubting Bull’s feelings for her more and more. Bull, having been hurt and humiliated once before, is unwilling to mentally or verbally commit to ‘forever’ with anyone again, yet he cannot imagine his life without Sam. The emotions and the ups and downs in this story just reach out and grab you from page one. One minute you’re basking in the glow of the love between Bull and Sam, and the next you’re in tears because of the pain they’re unknowingly inflicting on themselves and each other. It is all so beautifully conveyed by the author that you can’t help but feel the same emotions as you read their story. All the characters we’ve met in previous books in this series make a return appearance, so we get to catch up and see how the rest of the team is doing. I love that about this series. Jean Joachim manages to bring us up to date with everyone in each of these books, blending them all smoothly into the current story line. This book is no exception, it is truly a ‘can’t put it down’ read.
