Description: This is a practical manual of techniques and principles of small animal endoscopic procedures and a color atlas of endoscopic examination findings. This textbook updates the first edition, published in 1990, with the addition of chapters on canine arthroscopy and thoracoscopy and expanded coverage of other procedures.
Purpose: The goal of providing a comprehensive text of small animal endoscopy with both instructional and reference value is well met. This book provides useful diagrams and clear step-by-step instructions in basic and advanced endoscopic procedures. It includes abundant color plates depicting normal and abnormal endoscopic anatomy, which are of great reference value to both beginners and experienced endoscopists.
Audience: While targeted to interns, residents, and specialists, this book is a valuable resource for all small animal veterinarians utilizing endoscopic equipment or wanting to learn endoscopic techniques.
Features: Chapters are organized according to specific principles (endoscopic equipment and documentation), procedures (foreign body removal, tube placement), or areas of the body being evaluated. They include indications for the particular procedure, appropriate equipment, patient preparation and positioning, details of performing the procedure, descriptions of endoscopic findings in specific disease processes, and limitations of the procedure. Most chapters feature tables and summaries which are very helpful, although difficult to read. References are listed at the end of each chapter and most chapters include a section of corresponding color plates.
Assessment: Although some of the color plates, particularly in the tracheobronchoscopy chapter, lack good detail, most are of excellent quality. Much of the information regarding specific disease conditions or suggestions regarding particular procedures is contained within the captions associated with the color plates and does not appear in the body of the text. The text is very complete, well-organized, and clearly written with excellent illustrative material.
