Small Things by Joe DeRouen

It's a hot June morning in a small Midwestern town when fifteen-year-old Shawn Spencer arrives at the church for his best friend Tanner's funeral. Though his drowning was officially ruled an accident, Tanner's sister Jenny swears she saw something rise up from the Carthage Lake to pull the struggling teenager beneath the surface.

Shawn doesn't believe in monsters... but he will...

The real threat, however, lies in the man behind the monster, a mysterious old man who has vowed to settle an old grudge and regain something that was stolen from him decades earlier. To survive the dark days and nights ahead, Shawn must not only decipher what the man is after, he must move past his own grief, fears, and insecurities, and learn to trust in Jenny, the disgraced town sheriff, and, most importantly, in himself.

The Small Things trilogy spans forty years and three generations in a tale of murder, betrayal, corruption, sacrifice, love, redemption, faith and magic that culminates in a showdown that will pit the very forces of heaven and hell against Shawn and his family in a battle for the future of mankind and the world itself.

Wow, I love this book!  I bought it for my Nook and couldn't be happier that I did!  The characters are very relatable, the plot kept me guessing, and I just loved  the world that the author created, it really felt like 1975. Fantasy, horror, paranormal romance, this has it all! There is a teaser for the next book at the end of Small Things, and I can't wait!

Amazing read! Keeps you wanting to turn the page to see what Jenny and Shawn will do while facing the terror that has befallen their sleepy 1970's town. Mr. DeRouen  has done an exceptional job in creating his characters without losing his reader. Very nice set up for book two (though we have to wait until fall of this year, 2013, for the book!) as well.

I really enjoyed Small Things and I hope to see more books by this author soon. He's created a very intricate world full of magic and mystery, and I could see the series going well beyond the trilogy it mentions on the back cover. Shawn and Jenny rock!!

There's a monster in Carthage Lake, and it's stalking 15-year-old Shawn Spencer and and his friend, Jenny McGee. Jenny swears she saw the monster kill her brother, Tanner, who was Shawn's best friend. Shawn doesn't believe her, until one fateful night... Would you like to know more? SMALL THINGS, Joe DeRouen's debut novel, is several things at once: a coming-of-age novel, a small-town horror story, a B-monster movie that scares the shit out of you, and a dark fantasy nerd-tale full of in-jokes for comic book and action figure fans. It's a little Matheson, a little Bradbury, a little King, and a little John Constantine, all rolled up into an entertainingly spooky tale that you'll want to read in one go. DeRouen tells a strong story in plain language and he's only bound to get better. (Disclaimer: I was a First Reader for SMALL THINGS in manuscript form, and I've enjoyed it both times I've read it.) Recommended.

Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite Small Things: Small Things Trilogy, Volume 1 is an urban fantasy written by Joe DeRouen. Shawn Spencer was in a world of hurt and disbelief as he sat in a church, listening to a priest conduct his best friend's funeral service. He still couldn't believe that Tanner was really dead. They had been best friends since fourth grade, and they were going to co-own a car together soon. The thought that Tanner had drowned in the lake was completely ridiculous. They had spent hours fishing and playing there, and knew all the sinkholes and other dangerous places to avoid. Even stranger, however, than the official statement that Tanner had died, was his sister Jenny's assertion that he had been killed by a monster that had risen from the water while Tanner was swimming and had dragged him underneath the surface. Shawn knew that monsters didn't exist, but nothing really seemed to make sense to him anymore. Joe DeRouen's urban fantasy novel, Small Things, is a dark and powerful tale filled with action, adventure, and the supernatural. Shawn and Jenny's investigative partnership begins with his fulfilling a promise he and Tanner made to teach her how to swim, but it soon appears that the two of them are being stalked by something demonic that wants to feed on them after it retrieves a talisman its master has commanded it to find. Small-town Carthage, Illinois has become a deadly place indeed, at least for these two teens as they try to stay alive while investigating the mystery they've become so deeply involved in. Tanner and Shawn's exploration of the local haunted house earlier that summer, an old structure that had supposedly been owned by one of Shawn's relatives, might have been the catalyst for everything that's happened. Shawn's determined to figure it all out -- if he can stay alive long enough. Small Things is one of those marvelous stories that transcends genres. It's definitely a coming of age tale with just enough horror to keep the reader thinking about Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Robert McCammon's classic offerings, and that's a very good combination. Add to it an urban fantasy that reaches back through the centuries, and you've got the recipe for an unforgettable read. And that's exactly what Small Things is. I marveled as the story just kept on getting better and better and was quite pleased to discover that it's just the first volume in a trilogy. This is a thrilling and suspenseful tale that delivers and it's most highly recommended.

Kept me on the edge of my seat! Small Things begins with the funeral of a 15 year old boy who drowned. Naturally everyone is grieving, especially Tanner’s best friend, Shawn. But things are not as they seem. An evil presence is ready to take Shawn on the journey of his young life. There are plenty of twists and turns in this dark tale that’s reminiscent of Stephen King. This one kept me on the edge of my seat.

You will be captivated from page 1 until the end, and this book will leave you wanting more. Fortunately, Small Things is the first book in this trilogy of stories. Joe DeRouen does an excellent job of twisting and turning the plot while keeping us on the edges of our seats. If you like scary stories, you’ll love Small Things!

The characters are wonderfully drawn and have stayed with me long after I read the book. There's not many books that one can say they "really could not put down." This is one! You're in for a very enjoyable read.

3 1/2 really, but I can't figure out half stars. The story itself was good. I liked the protagonists and felt they were well developed. The problem I had was with some of the interactions between the main characters. Jokingly punching one another in the shoulder is fine, but I found that kind of behavior a little overplayed. Pacing was good as I found myself in the "just one more page" on a multitude of occasions. Overall, a pleasant and creepy read.

Totally twisted story. Dark and creepy, a little scary at times. Very well written and easy to follow. It took me longer to start reading, as this is not my normal read, but once I started, I couldn't stop. I can't wait for more.

Exciting, original, and at time very scary. I read this over two consecutive nights and couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the Small Things trilogy!

This author needs a really good editor. A good editor would make such a difference. His sentence construction leaves a lot to be desired at times. The story line is somewhat interesting, but very long drawn out and I did manage to finish the book, but someone help him find a good editor, please.
