Cain smiled widely, tugging her to his side, he snuggled close to her and Maggie turned to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck. She could feel how calm he was and she closed her eyes, resting her head against his.
Finally, it all seemed so right, if she didn’t think too much about everything Cain had told her at the burning grounds, it was perfect. But who cared if the world really was full of monsters. With him she felt safe, that’s all that really mattered.
Mischievously, Cain nudged her nose with his and rolled her to her back growling playfully. Pulling her collar away, he kissed the band-aid he’d placed on her neck. “Tell me you’re happy,” he murmured quietly.into the crook.
“Very happy.”
“And you’re not afraid anymore?” he asked, looking at her.
“Nope.” She shook her head.
“Good.” Drawing her close to him, he held her. Wanting nothing more than to hear her breath and feel her heart beat in time with his.
The peace and quiet lasted a whole ten minutes, until Cain was called away to take a phone call.Growling and releasing Maggie from his arms. “I won’t be long,” he promised getting up and running toward the house.
When Cain returned, a few minutes later, Maggie wasn’t at the blanket. Frowning, he twisted around to look for her.
“Lose something?” Chloe asked, sneaking up behind him.
“Maggie.” He shrugged
“She went to talk to Carrie. Over there.” Chloe pointed.
Cain nodded, and bent to pick up the empty beer bottles lying on the quilt.
“Here, if your going,” Chloe said, handing him two from her blanket. “So can I talk about the, you know what now?” Chloe asked.
“No? What?” Cain teased, balancing the bottles between his fingers.
“Cain…” she whined.
“Yes.” He laughed. “She knows about the house. Talk all you want.” He turned away to go get the fresh round of beer. On his way he found Maggie, standing to the side of the fire, talking to Carrie and he leant in to kiss her on his way past. “I’ll be right back,” he said, without stopping
“Where are you going now?” she called after him.
He held up the empty bottles filling his hands, and Maggie nodded.
When Cain returned this time, Maggie was sitting with Chloe and Aunt Sarah. They were talking about the house and Maggie was glowing as she raved to the other women about it. Cain was thrilled to see her so exuberant, and more than a little relieved to see her so comfortable among his pack.
All of her earlier nervousness seemed to be gone. A few pack members stopped to talk to her and she was relaxed, fitting in better than even he’ dreamt possible. Maybe too well he decided, wondering how he was going to extract her from the throng beginning to gather around her.
It was an hour later when Cain finally managed to pull her away from his family and friends and lead her back to their blanket by the fire.
“What’s got into you?” Maggie laughed, when he sat down and pulled her onto his lap.
“I miss you and I am tired of sharing.” He nuzzled her cheek, positioning her between his legs and wrapping his arms around her. Satisfied, he breathed her in and felt her relax against his chest, molding against him perfectly, as she sank into his arms
