About the Author
When she's not working, she can be found in the wilds of Montana testing her patience while she tries to hone her skills at various crafts (quilting, pottery, and painting are not her areas of expertise). She always believes the cup is neither half full nor half empty, but it better be filled with wine.

Title: Smoke and Ashes - Montana Heroes 1 Author: Danika Winters Published: 5-1-2016 Publisher: Harlequin Intrigue Pages: 288 Genre: Mystery, Thrillers & Suspense Sub Genre: Romance; Intrigue Series ISBN: 9780373749614 ASIN: B015MO3ZV4 Reviewer: DelAnne Reviewed For: NetGalley My Rating: 4 1/2 Stars . I have read Harlequin since before my teen years. It was the only romance books my mother would allow in her home because back in the early seventies it was guaranteed to be clean enough for any age. I of course had my favorite authors like Anne Mather, Betty Neels and Anne Hampton. Over the years their line has developed and evolved. They now have a bit more content that might not be suitable for preteens, but I have never lost my love of their various series. Today my favorite authors now include Diana Palmer, the late Lass Small (I can remember waiting for release day on her books and pouncing. I still have everyone of her Desire series that I pull out to read over and over. So many great authors to love and now I have one more. Danika Winters has crafted characters that one can identify with and want to get to know better. Smoke and Ashes the first in the Montana Heroes series gives us Kevin Jensen, a fire inspector in Missoula who is investigating a serial arsonist and a neighbor of Heather Sampson who is in an abusive marriage with a controlling husband who demeans and undermines her confidence. Heather is afraid to leave and try to start over even though she knows her marriage is long dead and her husband wants a divorce. Kevin, a widower, had been attracted to Heather since they first met but since she was married he settled for friendship instead and having her help watch his kids when he was working. Everything changes when the arsonist picks Heather as his next victim with the idea of upping the ante and trying to kill her in the fire. Kevin saves her and suddenly there is more than friendship. Kevin knows he has to catch the arsonist before he makes a martyr of Heather and he loses his new love. The story starts out a little on the slow side, but quickly picks up the pace and you will not want to put it down. The firebug's identity is cloudy that is slowly revealed through the clues placed throughout the story. I was a bit surprised who it was when I finally figured it out. My rating is 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Smoke and Ashes by Danica Winters is a quick, steamy, intriguing read. While recovering from surgery I've found it difficult to stay interested in many books. But, this one kept me intrigued from start to finish. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
