Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Espionage has been a part of war since the dawn of recorded time and probably earlier. In this volume of the illustrated "War Stories" series readers are provided a quick overview of some snippets of history linked to spies and the intelligence gathering work they do in wartime. In quick succession Charlotte Guillain presents some examples of spies dating back to the ancient world and running up to the modern era. For example, the spy work of Unionist Elizabeth Van Lew and Rebel Belle Boyd during the American Civil War are presented as an example of espionage working at cross purposes. Throughout this introduction to wartime intelligence gathering periodic text box inserts pop up each of which details an interesting fact or a thought question. In the end this concise overview offers youngsters a brief look behind the curtain into the world of sneaky spies and the causes they serve. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
