If you intend to write your first novel, write one like this. Mike Graham writes about what he knows, the lives of Detroit cops, Detroit newspeople and the bleak winters that they work in. He has been there and done all of those jobs. A wondefully crafted book. Race, politics and alcoholism are intelligently and deftly handled. A horrible crime in a bleak city but you feel almost uplifted at the end. Can't wait for the next one!

The Snow Angel, the first in what will hopefully be a series, by Michael Graham, was a book that I truthfully had trouble putting down. My copy probably has traces of breakfast, lunch and dinner on it to say nothing of a late night snack. It was a gripping story and I was sorry when it came to a most satisfactory end. As a former Police Officer on both sides of the Atlantic, I was impressed with Graham¿s ability to capture the intense feelings that go with a major investigation of this type where time is of the essence. His primary characters many of whom I am sure I have met before, were also easy to relate to. Some you would like to have strangled and others you would have enjoyed working with. Hopefully we will get to meet them again ¿ sooner rather than later.

Michael Graham's 'The Snow Angel' takes us many steps beyond the traditional police procedural. This deeply involving novel not only takes us through the commission, investigation and resolution of a horrible crime, it lays bare the inner workings of inter-department rivalry, the politics of policing and, most important, into the wounded hearts and souls of those who struggle to remain in touch with their humanity as they deal, hands on, with the lowest and worst in our society.

I half expected this book to be a Joseph Wambaugh novel moved to Detroit. Although there are humorous elements present and the workings of a police department are shown in an interesting way, The Snow Angel is far more than a page turning police procedural. Tersely stated, what Mr. Graham is discussing at the bottom of it all is the indomitable human spirit the notion that mankind will not merely endure but prevail when confronted with very serious problems. While this topic is never directly mentioned, by the end of The Snow Angel it is brought into the spotlight at the front and center of the stage via the novel¿s troubled characters resolving personal difficulties. William Faulkner pointed out that an author by writing of compassion, sacrifice, endurance, courage, honor, hope, pity, and pride can help man endure and prevail in the trials encountered in life. If this is so, Mr. Graham is doing his job.

It has been a long time since I considered calling in sick because a book had me in it's grips! The Snow Angel had me hooked. The story is compelling, the tension and human drama are real and all the character are fleshed out and got under my skin. I can't wait to find the three main characters Kane , Bell and Easterly again.
