Although they've been touted as an art punk ensemble -- and compared to the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sleater-Kinney -- Milwaukee's Red Knife Lottery are far more incendiary. Lead vocalist Ashley Chapman does at times remind listeners of Karen O, but the riotous sound collages her bandmates concoct are an ideal forum for her screaming vengeance. RKL's assault bears resemblance to the Blood Brothers -- a thought affirmed by similar synthesizer lines, hypnotic rhythms, and the guitar noise that permeates inventive concoctions like "The Magnificent Ghost" and the distortion-fueled winner "Call-Girls in Pink Hospitals." If the pinnacle here is the thumping, ass-kicker of an opener "Samantha Brown Get Down! Get Down!," the song's lyrics ("He's coming to rape you/His knife to your throat so you will fall in love") are as disturbing as they are provocative. That dichotomy gives Chapman and her cohorts way more oxygen and staying power than your average wannabe scenesters.
