Soby's New South Cuisine by Rodney Freidank, Carl Sobocinski, David Williams

Now you can make all the Soby's guest favorites at home! Imagine enjoying She Crab Soup; Fried Green Tomato Napoleon; Clemson Blue Cheese Fondue; Baked Oysters; Thompson Farms Peachwood Smoked Pork Chop; Pimiento Mac and Cheese and Smoked Port Royal Shrimp at home. And if your family, friends, and guests haven't yet visited Soby's, they will understand why Soby's Restaurant in Greenville, SC, has been a favorite for more than a decade. The cookbook includes 224 four-color pages with more than 150 enticing recipes from the award-winning restaurant and 200 color photos, and also pays tribute to the Southeast and the nationally acclaimed revitalization of downtown Greenville, SC.

Authors Rodney Freidank, Carl Sobocinski, David Williams and Richard Peck teamed up to develop a book that includes recipes that have made Soby's a dining destination. The recipes are simple enough for a home cook to prepare, yet elegant enough to impress friends at any dinner party. Each recipe is accompanied by a suggested wine pairing, to make the dish even more memorable.

The book also tells the story of how Chef David Williams and restaurateur Carl Sobocinski created Soby's in 1997 from an old shoe store and how downtown Greenville has become a tourism destination since that time with unique restaurants, hotels, boutiques, art galleries, concert halls, and parks.

South Carolina native and Food Network star chef Tyler Florence wrote the foreword to the book. Southern chefs Louis Osteen of Louis's at Pawley's, Pawley's Island, SC, and Frank Lee of S.N.O.B., Charleston, SC, and cookbook author and TV personality Nathalie Dupree have also given it praise.

Finally, after years of dining at Soby's, the cookbook has arrived. Surprised, delighted and impressed don't begin to describe my feelings about this book. My focus had been on access to the recipes for my favorite dishes ~ put the Lobster Cobbler at the top of that list ~ and I never imagined the book would also be a work of art. This is much more than a cookbook it is the history of Soby's from conception, thru construction, on to success and the people that made their dream a reality. My only dilemma is that this book is far too beautiful to stay in the kitchen. So now I must buy another ~ one for the coffee table and a working copy for the kitchen.

This book is really pretty incredible. I¿ve lived in Greenville for 6 years, and I¿ve eaten at Soby¿s, but I was surprised at how accessible some of these recipes really are. Their menu changes too, so this is a neat opportunity to sample things I may have missed in the restaurant. Watermelon Gazpacho, for Pete¿s sake! And there are great tips throughout the book ¿ make the pimiento cheese ahead of time, how to properly blacken, wine and beer pairings, the history of roux ¿ it¿s really a pretty good read on top of the recipes. The voices of the people really come through. The photography is gorgeous! And I particularly enjoyed the history at the beginning ¿ before and after pictures always blow my mind. Now, I¿m by no means a stellar chef, but this cookbook didn¿t scare me. So there you go. I¿d say that this is just a long-overdue chance to bring Soby¿s home!

For years we have enjoyed dining at Soby's and have eagerly awaited this cookbook. And it was worth the wait. Filled not only with recipes of some of the finest cuisine along with wonderful techniques and suggestions, the book also depicts the evolution of downtown Greenville and one of its most recognizable ¿ and popular ¿ restaurants. A fine gift for family and friends ¿ or yourself!

As a person who thoroughly enjoys fine dining, but does not have the expertise to create such great dishes 'and wine pairings!' without some help, this is a fabulous book. All of my favorites recipes from the restaurant are here, plus many new ideas. The recipes are easy to follow, clearly described, and many have pictures, plus the great wine pairings and suggestions. Along with the recipes, there is information regarding the Upstate SC area 'a great weekend getaway', as well as the history of the 'Table 301' restaurant group. You don't have to be from SC to enjoy and appreciate this publication. Great as a gift, or for yourself. Beautifully composed and presented.

This book is amazing. I just finished the Applewood Smoked Bacon Pork Tenderloin. I loved the full color pictures of all the recipes. This was more than 'your mom's hometown cookbook,' Its one you want beside you in the kitchen, as well as show to your friends. I have been to soby's many times, and to be able to do what their artists do there at home was a real treat. I am a culinary arts professor, and found the recipes good enough to win competitions, but easy enough for a first year culinarian. This is a must for anyone who loves food, art, or the combination of both. Well done...hope to see more books in the future.
