David Lane's book follows the 17th Michigan Volunteer Infantry from Detroit, Michigan. The 17th Michigan seems to have been almost everywhere, taking part in the Battle of South Mountain, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Siege of Vicksburg, Siege of Knoxville, Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Battle of Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign.
The regiment served in both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Tennessee.

The following of the Volunteer from enlistment to discharge is unusual, and enlighting. There is one thing though that is absolutely nesessary if you ar to get the most from the book. You will either need to be very familiar withthe Civil WAr or have and overview, or companion book. The enlisted man as usual does not always define exactly where or why the battles or marches take place.
