ORIGINALS comprises seven Corea originals from the '70s and '80s, two Preludes from Alexander Scriabin's Opus 11, and four extemporaneous improvisations inspired by ideas and concepts elicited from the audience. Playing with characteristic rhythmic imagination, precise articulation, an attack ranging from percussive to legato, and complete right hand-left hand independence, Corea constructs magisterial, crystalline declamations spanning a kaleidoscopic array of sonic color and emotion. To wit: On "Children's Song #12" the pianist begins inside his instrument, plucking the strings with a water glass, gradually resolving to endlessly imaginative variations through a 13-minute invention. The track represents the musical values embodied in every note of this challenging project, which includes Corea masterpieces "Spain," "Armando's Rhumba," "Brasilia," and "Yellow Nimbus" -- melody-making of the highest order by an artist who inflects every line with finesse, emotion, and an unremittingly poetic sensibility.
