Overview

Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein

In addition to his superb skills as a jazz pianist, Bill Charlap has been widely praised for his unerring taste in popular song. This is an artist who seems to know every standard in the Great American Songbook, and then some. He understands what makes a great song work, and how he and his fellow musicians can bring substance to their improvisations upon it. On Somewhere, Charlap once again displays his knack for picking appropriate material with this all–Leonard Bernstein program. Working with his exceptionally attuned trio mates, Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums, Charlap (who also plays without accompaniment at times) makes the most of some of Bernstein’s treasures, including “Cool,” “America,” and “Someday” from West Side Story; “Lucky to Be Me” and “Lonely Town” from On the Town; “Glitter and Be Gay” from Candide; and such lesser-known jewels as “Jump,” “Lonely Girl,” and “Big Stuff.” The trio, unsurprisingly, is near perfect in its cohesion as an ensemble, while the solo efforts of all involved are striking in their invention and always appropriate to the material at hand. Yet another Charlap triumph.
