Overview

Sonata for a Scoundrel by Anthea Lawson

The Muse...

Clara Becker is a supremely gifted composer--a talent of little to use to a woman in 1830s Europe. Her compositions only have worth when they are published under her brother's name, yet this deception barely enables them to scrape out a living in the poorest quarter of London.

Meets the Master...

Darien Reynard, the most celebrated musician in Europe, pursues success with a single-minded intensity. When he comes across Becker's compositions, he knows that this music will secure his place in history. Darien tracks the composer down and, with some difficulty, convinces the man to tour with him. Mr. Becker agrees, but with the most unusual condition that he bring along his sister...

Set against the glittering backdrop of 19th century musical celebrity, Sonata for a Scoundrel is the newest full-length historical romance novel from RITA-nominated author Anthea Lawson.

I don't read too many historicals, but the musical theme of this one pulled me in. I love the author's talent for writing music as, well, almost as an emotion or a character. She brought music alive in this story. As well, I thought the characters had believable issues for the time period. I found myself riveted, especially following the evolution of the relationship between Clara and Darien.

This was a magical read.  From the first sentence, I found the book hard to put down, but I didn't want the story to end.  Clara and Darien were true soul mates; there was a physical attraction, but they were joined spiritually through their music.  (So many romance authors overuse the term "soul mates".  This author did not even use words; she demonstrated it through beautiful, poetic passages describing their feelings as they performed together.)  The historical characters in the book were well researched.  (the author's notes at the end were quite interesting.)  All the characters were well defined and believable.   The story line was original, and all plot elements were resolved satisfactorily.  I will certainly look for this author again.

What an extraordinary read! I was blown away by the historical details - it's amazing how much the author must've taken the time to research to write this novel! It was beautiful, enchanting, and oh so romantic!

Really good story. The descriptions of Clara's feelings when she is composing were so detailed and realistic that you felt her emotions through the music as well. It was difficult to discern how the story would end but oh my, what an ending ! Excellent storyline.

It has been a looong time since I read a romance with a new story line. It was so refreshing and the description of the music and feelings that it inspired in the characters made you feel like you were there. I bought this as a set of 10 and this story alone made the purchase worth it.

One of the best books I've ever read! An exceptional tale of two musicians who compose their story through the love of music. Such a breath of fresh air to read a well written novel.

Sonata For A Scoundrel by Anthea Lawson is an entertaining historical romance. Ms. Lawson has provided readers with a well-written book and populated it with outstanding characters. Clara composes music but her family claims they are from her brother. Darien is a famous violinist in need of a composer. Clara and Darien's story is loaded with drama, sizzle and suspense. I enjoyed reading Sonata For A Scoundrel and look forward to reading more from Anthea Lawson in the future. Sonata For A Scoundrel is book 1 of the Music of the Heart Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Yes it's got a different than usual storyline. Yes the author has probably done some research on the music of that period, if she hasn't , we wouldn't know otherwise. It has all the trappings of a popular book. Elaborate sex scenes, expansive mind chatter filling 600 + pages, good diction and editing. What more could you possibly want? Ah, it's FREE! So we read great reviews which tell us to go and buy the series. What the heck, we buy other books which are not half as good? It's indeed a low bar.

Anther Lawson manages to give words a musical soul as she unfolds the story of two musicians grappling with their individual passions and life's realities. It is so refreshing to read an historical romance that uses music and performance as the baseline of the plot. It is very apparent that a great deal of research was done and integrated throughout the novel. Thank-you, Anthea, from a lover of music and history!

The only thing that would have made this story better is less detail with the intimate encounters

This was a musical historical romance novel and while I'm not familiar with the musicians of the time nor the history, it was an enjoyable story of love found between Darien & Clara.

Master musician hires composer but it is really his sister who writes the music Excellent romantic tension, plot, characters , & dialogue Perfect ending Loved it !

Not only was this longer but compared to other historical romances; the lack to rush into intimate scenes and great care to bring you into this romance filled with music was a lovely break! I would highly suggest you give this a try!
