Overview

Maroon 5 have certainly come a long way since their days in the indie outfit Kara's Flowers. After the band's demise in 1999, frontman Adam Levine surrounded himself with New York City's urban hip-hop culture and found a new musical calling. Maroon 5 was born and their debut album, Songs About Jane, illustrates an impressive rebirth. It's groovy in spots, offering bluesy funk on "Shiver" and a catchy, soulful disposition on "Harder to Breathe." "Must Get Out" slows things down with its dreamy lyrical story, and Levine is a vocal dead ringer for Men at Work's Colin Hay. Don't wince -- it works brilliantly. Songs About Jane is love-drunk on what makes Maroon 5 tick as a band. They're not as glossy as the Phantom Planet darlings; they've got grit and a sexy strut, personally and musically. It's much too slick to cross over commercially in 2002, but it's good enough for the pop kids to take notice.

Editorial Reviews

Rolling Stone - Gavin Edwards
The band hasn't yet achieved the Prince-fronting-Led Zeppelin sound it strives for, but it's not too shabby to evoke Maxwell leading the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I was watching VH1 Countdown and this band came on. Never heard of them before. Their "Harder to Breathe" perked my interest. After picking up this band's CD, "Songs About Jane", I fell in love with their music. It's a cross between several genres - pop, Seattle rock, funk, and jazz. Not only is the rhythm hypnotic, but the lead singer has a certain style of singing that's very refreshing. He knows when to hold a note and when to spit out the words. He voice is another instrument jiving with the band. Can't describe it with words. Buy it and find out for yourselves.

This is the best cd eva!!! This is a cd that you can definitely keep listening to over and over again and not get tired of it. I pretty much memorized the lyrics of each song. My faves are Track 01 and 10 (I know all the words to 10) I highly recomend that you get this cd. You won't regret it.

This album is so very beautiful. The vocals are amazing, full of emotion. My favorite songs are “Sunday Morning” and “She will be loved” which, beautiful lyrics makes, cry every time. Do I need to say more? This album is terrific!

With it's originality, and interesting sexy sound, Maroon5 has achieved an outstanding should-be-grammy-winner album. I listen to this cd very often and enjoy more each time. I recommend this album to someone that has a wide taste in music or music with a funky twist on things.

Maroon 5? At first I was like "Who are they?" But then, I heard This Love on the radio a million times! (I still do) And I'm like "they rock!" And so, I would listen to it over, and over, and then I realized that I wanted to buy the CD. So I did. Oh,yeah, Adam Levine, the lead singer, is so hot!

finally, the music world gives us a band that produces a record of pure bliss. What an amzing cd Maroon 5 created! After a lack of sales under the names Kara's Flowers, the band added a member and changed their pop/rock driven sound by infusing major R&B and funk vibes. I bought this CD way back in 2003 when "Harder To Breathe" had just finished its semi-successful run as a radio single. Also, i just attended their concert in MD on April 16! god it was amazingm and the guitar work was incredible. Adam crealy is a gifted musician who knows how to work the crowd. it was absloutley sold out! i advise EVERYONE to buy this cd, you definatley wont regret it. its just one of those great albums were every track on the cd is great, deep, and worthwhile. P.S. if you get the chance to see these guys live, definatley grab it. it gives you a whole new appreciation for thier music, especially their guitar work.

It's been a long time since an album maintained rotation in my CD player without having to skip over a single tune. Maroon 5 is an immensely talented band; they can write, sing, play instruments, and perform on stage unlike very few artists out there today. This is NOT a cookie-cutter, "pop" album. It's full of heart, soul, passion, anger, sensuality, and so many other emotions. A must-own!

I heard the song Harder to Breathe and thought "wow a new rock band/alternative band." but after purchasing the album I quickly realized that they were just another pop fluff buy band. I was majorly dissapointed. Their voices are polished and fake like Enya. Their beats are techno pop fluff like all the other boy bands to come before them like N'SYNC and the Backstreet Boys. So if you are going to buy this album from hearing and liking the song Harder to Breath, listen to the rest of the album first.

everyone should get this album...it appeals to a very large audience...it works as a virtually fool-proof gift, too.

This album is absolutely wonderful. The lead singer, Adam Levine, has an amazing voice and the instrumental is very good as well. Each song is different and the lyrics don't tell you everything but have you figure it out yourself. I have been able to listen to this album over and over again without getting tired of it. Unlike musicians like Good Charlotte, you will not get tired of Maroon 5 as the singing is not whiney and the lyrics are more abstract. Buy this album!

I bought Songs About Jane 2 weeks ago. The day I bought it I played it all the way through. Let's just say I haven't listened to the radio or any song by any other artist since I bought it. I'm not kidding either. And it's not like i have to skip songs because I don't like them, I like them ALL. It;s fabulous!

Why every one? Every song is great, practically perfect (except for number 12, that's just okay). The first song, "Harder To Breathe", is the best rock song that I've heard. Buy the CD, but, uh, not if it's over 15 dollars. Not that it has any relevance, but I'm watching Dogma right now. It's pretty good.

In a period of posers and wannabes, it is incredibly refreshing to hear such a bold and new sound. Sometimes I feel that a lot of bands have popularity, but aren't good, these guys are the contrary. Harder to Breath and This Love are great, but they aren't the only ones. The sound is truly retro and the guys deserve the limelight.
