Overview

This compilation of 1970s (and a couple of late '60s) movie and TV themes will be entertaining to those who think back fondly on the decade. The Conniff touch (in which everything is filtered through a 1940s swing sensibility) works best on music already close to his buoyant style, such as "Love Is All Around," the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Even the slower tunes work well, as long as they already have a nostalgic glow, notably "The Way We Were." Elsewhere, however, Conniff is forced to adapt himself to the rock-oriented sounds of "Stayin' Alive" and "Theme From S.W.A.T.," and he can't really do much more than ape the arrangements from the original recordings, which makes the musicians and singers sound uncomfortable. But if you were already an adult in the 1970s, this may be the right approach for you.
