Overview

Songs from the Longleaf Pines

Putting his faith where his heart is and revisiting his deepest musical roots, road dog Charlie Daniels turns reflective on his first gospel album. As in all of his musical endeavors, Daniels brings conviction and spirited playing to the bluegrass-based Songs from the Longleaf Pines. The songbook includes a couple of A. P. Carter monuments -- a high-flying country blues rendering of "Working on a Building" and a toe-tapping workout on "Keep on the Sunnyside," featuring Mac Wiseman and Earl Scruggs -- as well as a deep country reading of two gospel standards: "Softly and Tenderly," featuring haunting harmonies from Cyndi Wheeler, and "How Great Thou Art," given a rustic, backcountry treatment with beautiful harmonies from the Whites. A couple of Bill Monroe gems bookend the collection: the fiddle-fired "Walking to Jerusalem (Just Like John)" and the eerie meditation "What Would You Give (In Exchange for Your Soul)." Daniels is joined by Ricky Skaggs on vocals on the celebratory "Preachin', Prayin', Singin'" and by Nickel Creek mandolinist Chris Thile, who shapes some impressionistic, Vince Guaraldi–like lines to accompany Daniels's recitation of the 91st Psalm and quietly picks out a somber, classical-influenced melody to accompany a dialogue of faith between Daniels and Wiseman, centered on a recitation of the 23rd Psalm. Backed by the GrooveGrass Boyz throughout, Daniels is fully invested in this material, making a Statement with a capital S and defying nonbelievers to remain unmoved by the force of his witnessing.
