From a RITA winner and USA Today bestseller, and winner of the Carol Award comes an epic love story of betrayal and redemption.

Markos Stavros wants to be a man of honor...

The last thing Marcos Stavros expects on the eve of his brother's wedding is to say goodbye to the land-and family-he loves. But a tragic event forces him to flee his beloved Greece, taking with him his younger brother Dino and the girl he loves, Sofia Frangos. With promises to care for both of them, Marcos must trust a man he's never met-his uncle Jimmy, the owner of a café during the bootleg era of Al Capone's Chicago. Suddenly Marcos is in a world he doesn't understand, forced to make sacrifices he can't live with. When he's forced to choose between family and the woman he loves, he makes a desperate attempt at freedom...

Dino Stavros longs to forget the promises he broke...

The last promise Dino made to Marcos was to watch over Sofia. But ten years later, Dino has put the tragedies of Chicago behind him, diving into his new life as a medical intern in Minneapolis, his promises forgotten. The world is not large enough, however, to keep him from reuniting with Sofia, and the reminders of all they lost together. When Pearl Harbor destroys his dreams, he turns to the one woman who truly knows him for comfort and redemption, only to find himself in the middle of a terrible betrayal. His only chance for honor comes in the battlefields of France-but is it too late to keep his promises?

Sofia Frangos' heart has been broken twice...

Sofia can't believe she's lost both the men she loved, but she will have to put her grief behind her if she hopes to survive the German occupation of Greece. More, she's become a link to the OSS agents helping to plot a British invasion. But what will freedom cost her? And can Marcos and Dino finally keep their promise to protect her?

From the sultry Chicago jazz clubs of the roaring twenties to the World War II battlefields of Europe to a final showdown in a Greek island village, the Sons of Thunder will discover betrayal, sacrifice and hopefully, their long-awaited redemption.

When I saw the cover of this book, I was intrigued enough to read the synopsis. I knew from that it would be a decent story, but I had no idea the emotions it would stir in me.When a book can bring a tear to your eye, it must be great! The author must be conveying the story in a way that you feel it and connect with it. I really did with this book.I sincerely hope the author considers a second book. I would love to know what happened to the characters, after the war. This is definitely on my recommendation list!

From my blog...Two brothers sharing a terrible past, faced with different views of the future, and both yearning for the same woman is just the beginning of Susan May Warren's epic Brother In Arms novel, Sons of Thunder is a deeply heart-wrenching and astonishingly beautiful novel filled with tragedy, betrayal, love, hope and redemption. Markos and Dinos Stavros are being sent to America in the aftermath of their brother Theo's tragic wedding reception. Their mother has chosen to stay behind in Greece and live with Theo's widower Zoë on Ramone Island. Meanwhile, for their safety, Markos and his younger brother Dino must be sent off to America to live with their uncle in Chicago. Faius Frangos and Sophia escort the boys to America. Once in America Markos and Dino desperately try to put the past behind them. Markos, Dinos and Sophia capture the readers heart in Susan May Warren's Sons of Thunder . Warren's novel is so achingly beautiful and masterfully written one cannot help but read from cover to cover without end. I sincerely enjoyed reading the three-part epic novel, Sons of Thunder, the lives of the characters, the lessons this story has taught as well as astonishingly vivid prose. I cannot praise Warren's Sons of Thunder enough and strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a beautiful, suspense-filled romance in a time long past.

Sons of Thunder is a fast paced book set in the World War II era with lots of excitement and violence! The books begins with a wedding reception in Greece which turns into a brawl with lives lost. Sofia, Markos and Dino escape to America to begin a new life with their uncle in Chicago. Uncle Jimmy turns out to be Jimmy the Greek! Sofia, Markos and Dino are very strong characters who learn that God loves us and is willing to redeem our lives when we ask Him to! This era is usually not my favorite but I enjoyed this story of redemption. I received a complimentary e-book copy of Sons of Thunder from the author. This is my honest opinion.

...not hidden in a corner in the back of the Bookstore. Sons of Thunder is the story of Marcos, Dino and Sophia, hardly more than children, forced to leave their island homeland and survive in a world they know little about and hardly understand. The story takes them from their late teens to their mid 30's; from Greece to America and home again. The characters are not perfect, doing what they need to do in order to survive 1930 Chicago and WWII, but the story has a wonderful message about accepting yourself and your faults. It is a excellent story that holds your interest from the first page to the last and would definitely make a great movie.

Sons of Thunder by Susan May Warren is an epic story which spans a couple of decades, and takes place on several continents. Though I don't usually care for World War II novels, the setting of this one swept me away. Warren took us from the Greek Isles to prohibition era Chicago, and back again, with enough description to make me feel like I've lived in both places. She filled the book with rich detail, multi-layered characters, and plot twists I never saw coming. I loved how she weaved the story around historical events and actual people. Fair warning, this is no light and fluffy read (a fact that suits this edgy christian fiction lover just fine). Warren has mastered the art of brainstorming the worst possible thing that could happen to her characters-then writing it in. These are flawed people who've drawn the short straw in life and nothing's off the table when it comes to self preservation. But resourcefulness will only get them so far. At some point each must decide if "God will deliver us" is just a platitude or a promise he can believe in. Sons of Thunder easily places in my top ten of 2010. It's the kind of novel that would make an excellent movie. I wonder if anyone's bought the film rights yet. Hollywood, are you listening?

Of the books I've read by this author, this was one I did not like. I thought it lacked the depth of Christian writing usually found in this type of fiction. It probably should only be listed in Fiction, not Christian fiction. Other books by the author are much better.

I received Sons as Thunder free from the publisher in exchange for my participation in a blog tour, but even if I hadn't, I would've bought the book as soon as it hit the shelves. I've been a Susan May Warren fan since I found her books in 2003. Excitement rushed through me when I learned about the Brothers in Arms series. Susie has a way of taking the reader on a journey--both emotionally and spiritually--as her characters experience challenging circumstances to find their happily ever afters. That's what I expected when I started reading Sons of Thunder, but I can honestly say the book went above and beyond, taking me on an unforgettable journey with characters who have stayed in my thoughts long after I closed the book. Immersing me in a rich storyworld on the sands of a small Greek community, Susie painted word pictures that created vivid images as I turned the pages. Her characters with their own unique voices and goals solidified the story in my heart when I cheered them on or grieved alongside them through their circumstances. My heart broke in several places by the choices made by the characters, but Susie dealt with a difficult issue with understanding, grace, and showed the redemptive power of God's unconditional love. Although the book was not riddled with Bible verses or showed characters attending church, the story showed God's redeeming grace without overpowering the reader. Susie May's books get better and better, but I have to say Sons of Thunder is the best book she has written to date. I'm so excited to read the rest of the series!!

I love a good historical Christian fiction book, and this proved to be one of the best ones so far. I loved everything about this book, from the style of writing to the characters to the theme. I was immediately pulled in from the first page, and wasn't let go until the very last. It was extremely hard to put this book down at times because I was so pulled into the story and the characters that I didn't want to lose the feeling of being in that time and place with those amazing people. This story takes place in both Greece and America, during the era of Al Capone and flapper girls. Amazingly written, this story of Markos, Dino and Sophia was both romantic and tragic, as well as suspenseful. It is a book that has something in it for everyone. My heart went out to all the characters, but Dino really tugged it the most, with his quietness. The message of redemption and sacrifice and friendship is truly amazing. I need tissues through alot of this book, but it's definitely worth it! This is definitely a start to a wonderful collection of books by a truly amazing author. I give this book a hands down 5 star rating and highest recommendations.

Incredibly romantic, tragically beautiful, heart-wrenching, and deeply moving, Sons of Thunder swept me away. This first novel in Susan's new series pulls you into each of the characters' lives in a powerful way. The passion, the heartache, the longing for love and acceptance. It's all in this story as well as the struggle to survive, the yearning for identity, the desire for someone Who will love you and always be there for you. This passionate tale of love and betrayal brilliantly portrays how an abiding faith in God is passed on by example and illustrated through an unwavering spiritual connection to the One Who is faithful and true. It also shows how God knows are greatest need and often allows us to go through the fire to bring us to where He wants us to be. Our trials cause us to grow up and live for others and not just ourselves. There were so many incredible lessons to be gleaned within the pages of this powerful story that I could go on and on. The bottom line is that this was, in my opinion, Susan May Warren's best novel yet because she captivated me and made me care about every character in this story in a way that rarely happens when I'm reading. I've heard it said that the best stories are ones where the author imagines the worst thing that could happen to their character in every scene, then makes that very thing happen. Susan does a perfect job at building tension and providing a realistic plot that moved me to tears several times. And talk about edgy. Wow! But so tastefully done. These characters were so real to me and I learned a lot from them. Can you tell I loved this book? Sons of Thunder is making my top fiction list for 2010.

Although held in high regard my many Sophia Frangos described herself as poison and warned her friends from letting themselves get too close to her. I was very captivated by her story and had to read to the end to see how everything worked out for this courageous woman. I want to read more books by this author.

Susan May Warren hit a home run with this book! Sons of Thunder stole my sleep last night since I could not put the book down! It's a wonderful story with redemption woven through the entire book, completely laced with Scripture. Markos, Sofie, and Dino captured my heart in such a compelling way that I felt like I learned the lesssons with them. I loved the way Mrs. Warren captured the heart of God--I felt myself reaching for a pen to take notes. For writers: If you want to study how to write compelling character arcs, develop plots twists or create a story world, study this book!
