Red Riding Hood lives in this dystopian retelling of the old fairy tale. In this version, if you kill the wolf, then you “catch” it’s soul and you become the wolf. Wren’s powers, if found out, could get her killed. Her mother keeps her safe with Old Magic tailismans. She’s a kid, one day she forgot them and when a wolf attacks her mother, Wren fights back the only way she knows how. Now what happens next morphs this tragic fairy tale into a romance as Liam, the witness to the attack now feels drawn in the wrong way to the “Wren in Wolf’s clothing”. Suspenseful AND romantic. Carrie Pulkin is a brave author taking this trophe on. The characters who populate this world are intelligent and it’s easy to care for them. This is a book I will recommend and reread myself. 4/5
