Soul Manifesto

Guitarist Rodney Jones couldn’t have picked a funkier -- or more sophisticated -- crew to jam with than the players on the aptly titled Soul Manifesto. Much like Jones himself, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, drummer Idris Muhammad, and bassist Lonnie Plaxico are first-rate jazz players who also like to stretch out and groove. The results are serious fun, with all involved sounding not as if they were slumming but as though they were exercising parts of their musical personality that they longed to stretch. Add saxophonist Maceo Parker, a paragon of R&B horn playing who also dips his hand in jazz, and you have a project that always keeps the beat flowing yet never skimps on the ace solos. The material concentrates on lean yet textured funk and dips into classics now and then, including “Soul Makossa” and two effective ballads, Bill Withers’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” and John Coltrane’s “Soul Eyes.”
