For animal lovers, nature enthusiasts, and the vast readership for gripping true-life stories, this African saga is a must-read adventure. It chronicles the unique Harnas Wildlife Foundation in Namibia, where Marieta van der Merwe and her family, former wealthy cattle farmers, have sold land to buy and care for embattled wildlife. We meet Sam, the "AIDS" lion infected by mistake at a vet clinic. Boerjke, a baboon with epilepsy and Down syndrome. Savanna, the one-eyed lioness. And Marieta van der Merwe herself, the inspiring proprietor of Harnas who shares her home with needy wild animals. Survivor of an early life fraught with personal tragedy in the African Bush, she now devotes herself as care-giver and ambassador for wildlife and wildland. Told with insight, humor, and thrilling immediacy by author and Harnas volunteer Barbara Bennett, this story will captivate readers of all ages.

Having been fortunate enough to visit Harnas Wildlife Foundation three times I found this book to be an accurate refelction of daily life there. While the book focuses on the life of Marieta van der Merwe it also gives the reader an insight into what goes on daily on the farm. Barbara Bennett has allowed me to relive my experiences while there but also to allow family and friends who have not experienced the farm an opportunity to read more about it, the history of the farm and about many of the animals and people there. This book is a wonderful way for former volunteers to once again experience their visit and for people who know nothing about the farm an interesting introduction. While nothing can replace a visit this book comes very close, allowing us a window into what goes on there.
"Soul of the Lion" can be described as part memoir and part biography. The author B.Bennett describes her own experience as a volunteer at the African Wildlife Sanctuary "Harnas". After spending a few weeks of working for this organization the author decides to share her own experience as well as shed some light on the founding Van Der Merwe family. It's a very entertaining read and very touching to see the level of committment to wildlife which Harnas is known for. Bennett shares some wonderful anecdotes about the animals that were rescued and the people who take care of them. A must read for anyone who loves nature and animals.
